Summer Fun and Learning Too!
Meadowbrook View Apartments' Summer Camp is in full swing with volunteers helping with arts and education projects and field trips throughout the city. Many of the volunteers are parents including nine volunteers donating over 50 hours per week. One volunteer from the neighborhood is helping children paint pots for planting a vegetable garden (see photo). The children planted seeds in the smaller pots and within a week the plants had sprouted and were ready to be planted in bigger pots outside. The volunteer talked to the children about using good soil and growing their own vegetables to eat. Well, they weren't too thrilled about eating the vegetables but they loved planting them and watching them grow!
Many thanks to the City of Seattle for providing free breakfast and lunches and to Amazon for books through the City's summer lunch program.
At Denice Hunt Townhomes, happy children are also participating in summer classes through Arts Corps. The children are furthering their education through performing theatre and improvisation and using various media to explore painting. Thank you to teaching artist Geoff Garza for sharing his many talents. Thank you, Arts Corps, for enriching the lives of our children and their families.
You may see the wonderful photos of these classes, taken by Susie Fitzhugh here . For more information on volunteering, please contact Ania at abeszterda@LIHI.org or call 206.957.8035.

Vote to APPROVE Veterans and Human Services Levy on August 16th Ballot: Proposition 1
Did you know that since 2006, the Veterans and Human Services Levy
has improved the lives of over 82,000 veterans, their families, and others in need?
LIHI has four projects funded through the levy, icluding McDermott Place. King County voters will have an opportunity to renew their commitment to help veterans and others in need to access affordable housing, rental assistance, mental health treatment, and services for young mothers and their babies.
The levy's key goal is reducing homelessness in our county. The levy has been a critical component to many of the initiatives under the Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness, and since 2005 invested nearly $40 million in strategies supporting the plan.
We hope you will join LIHI in our support for the levy. Vote Yes for Prop 1 on the August 16th ballot. For more information: www.vetsandhumanservices.org or see fact sheet.
