From Executive Director Sharon Lee

Kudos to our State legislators who voted for $50 million for the State Housing Trust Fund.  This was an incredible accomplishment given that the Capital Budget had been reduced so dramatically because of the recession.   $50 million means that approximately 1,250 homes will be built or preserved!

Please participate in donating to LIHI through The Seattle Foundation's GiveBIG online donation day on June 23rd!  (see article below)

LIHI is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year -- unbelievable as I so vividly remember celebrating the purchase of the Aloha Inn in 1991, LIHI's first housing project.

Please plan on celebrating this milestone with us at our 20th Anniversary Gala & Auction on October 28th at the Hyatt at Olive 8

We're enormously grateful for the teamwork that has allowed us to have 20 years of success.  We look forward to our next 20 years!

GiveBIG to LIHI - June 23!

See your money grow!  Donate to the LOW INCOME HOUSING INSTITUTE between 7 a.m. and midnight on June 23 through our page in The Seattle Foundation's Giving Center:

GiveBIG (www.seattlefoundation.org) is a community-wide giving challenge created by The Seattle Foundation that will increase the size of your donation to us.  This new, one-day, online charitable giving event will rally together our community on behalf of nonprofit organizations in King County.

We encourage you to join all our supporters in giving big on June 23. Your gift will support housing and supportive services for LIHI residents and LIHI's Urban Rest Stop, a hygiene center that provides free showers, restrooms, and laundry services to homeless individuals and families.

GiveBIG will magnify your generosity in several ways:

The Seattle Foundation and local businesses will match a share of every contribution made through The Seattle Foundation's online Giving Center between 7 a.m. and midnight on June 23.

During the day, you could be chosen at random to have your charity, LIHI, receive an additional $1,000 from GiveBIG's sponsors

Thank you for giving big.  With your help we will end homelessness in our community!  We thank The Seattle Foundation for their support!

International District Rotary Club Award

LIHI recently was awarded a $13,000 Family Homelessness Grant from the International District Rotary Club.  The project will provide supportive services to 13 homeless families with children  at Columbia Court, a transitional housing project in Seattle's Central District.  A majority of Columbia Court families are immigrant and refugee families whose primary languages include Oromo, Somali, Swahili, and Spanish.   Families live in rent-subsidized two-bedroom apartments for up to 24 months and the majority of the households are single parents.

The project will fund culturally competent child care, employment services, interpretation services, transportation assistance, and furniture. Thank you to the I.D. Rotary Club for supporting these important services!

Music Project at LIHI's site in Central District

This wonderful art piece is located at the future site of LIHI's affordable senior housing project at 20th and South Jackson Street in the Central District.  It is part of the Jackson Street Music History Project, sponsored by the Jackson Place Community Council in coordination with Pratt Fine Arts.  There are four pieces that celebrate the area's rich music history.  A celebration of the year-long music project is scheduled for Saturday, June 25th.   For more information:  http://jacksonplace.org/history.html.

Punk Rock Flea Market Rocks!

On June 4th, the 10th Punk Rock Flea Market was held in LIHI's main office basement and parking lot.  Held twice a year, the Flea Market has become a beloved event in Belltown, attracting vendors, musicians, artists, and visitors from throughout the region.  There were more than 80 vendors and nearly 1,500 guests which successfully helped raise funds for LIHI's housing and supportive services. The next Flea Market will take place in early December.  Kudos to Josh Okrent for coordinating this fun event twice a year!

New Additions to LIHI Board

LIHI welcomes Pearl Leung and Joe Ingram to the LIHI Board. Ms. Leung is the Community Relations Manager with Vulcan Inc. Mr. Ingram is the Executive Director of Vets Edge, a non-profit agency providing advocacy and outreach to homeless veterans.

"We are very excited that these two exceptional individuals will be serving on our Board of Directors," stated LIHI Executive Director Sharon Lee. "LIHI has been successful in building four affordable housing projects in South Lake Union and we are pleased with Vulcan's support in creating a mixed-income community. Pearl's planning and advocacy background will be an asset to the board. Joe's expertise will help LIHI develop hundreds more units to house this most deserving population as we try to end homelessness among veterans."
