Oahu, The Heart of Hawaii
On Oahu, Hawaii's timeless beauty blends with the modern luxuries of today. Swim in the warm waters of world-famous Waikiki one moment, then enjoy the dramatic mountain views of the Nuuanu Pali Lookout another. Watch the surfers on the legendary North Shore by day, then dance the night away in vibrant nightlife spots around Honolulu. Get a taste of local flavors in Kapahulu one night, then dine at a Five Diamond Hawaii Regional Cuisine restaurant the next. From indulging in urban comforts to escaping to natural wonders, Oahu's "town and country" experiences are unrivaled. With so much to see and do, you're never far away from just what you're looking for on Oahu. Here are some great places to stay in Oahu:
Sometimes called "The Gathering Place," Oahu certainly lives up to its name. The third largest Hawaiian island is home to the majority of Hawaii's diverse population, a fusion of east and west cultures rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people. It's this fundamental contrast between the ancient and the modern that makes discovering Oahu so enjoyable.
The Island offers a wealth of activities that will create indelible family memories. Sure your kids can always build a sand castle on Oahu's beautiful beaches, but how about taking them inside a real submarine at Pearl Harbor or letting them pet a dolphin at Sea Life Park?
You'll find family fun everywhere on Oahu. Take your kids to see the fish at the Waikiki Aquarium or get a bird's eye view of a giraffe at the Honolulu Zoo. Explore Hawaiian artifacts in the Bishop Museum or get lost together in the 1.7-mile garden maze at Dole Plantation. Or play authentic Hawaiian games and eat at a luau at venues like the Polynesian Cultural Center. On Oahu you'll find something here to charm any child, from surfing lessons in Waikiki to horseback rides at Kualoa Ranch. Whatever you choose to do, just don't forget to bring your camera.
Honolulu is the vibrant epicenter of Hawaii. Here you'll find everything from historic landmarks and treasured monuments to world-class shopping and a flourishing arts and culture scene. Home to the majority of Oahu's population, the sprawling city of Honolulu spreads throughout the southeastern shores of Oahu, from Pearl Harbor to Makapuu Point, encompassing world famous Waikiki.
Honolulu hos some of the most historic places from Iolani Palace, the Kawaiahao Church, the Mission Houses and the treasured artifacts of the Bishop Museum to iconic landmarks like the Aloha Tower, the King Kamehameha I Statue, the Duke Kahanamoku Statue and the historic Hawaii Theatre. Honolulu is also Hawaii's hot spot for arts, culture and entertainment. From the nightlife, live music and fine dining of Waikiki to the art galleries and underground bars of the Chinatown arts district. Whether you're looking for Hawaii's finest museums, or Hawaii's finest Hawaii Regional Cuisine chefs, the best resorts, festivals, and events, or just some fun things to do, you'll find it all in Honolulu.
Pearl Harbor, named for the pearl oysters once harvested there, is the largest natural harbor in Hawaii, a World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument and the only naval base in the United States to be designated a National Historical Landmark. The devastating aerial attack on Pearl Harbor resulted in 2,390 dead and hundreds wounded, and drove the United States into World War II. Pearl Harbor honors this history-changing event with the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites:
USS Arizona Memorial is a place to learn about this historic attack and pay your respects to the brave soldiers that fell that day. Begin at the Visitor Center where you can watch a film about the attack and view plaques honoring lives lost on that fateful day.
Battleship Missouri Memorial. General Macarthur accepted the unconditional Japanese surrender that ended WWII on September 2, 1945 on the Surrender Deck of the Battleship Missouri Memorial. Now located at Pearl Harbor's historic Battleship Row, the massive "Mighty Mo" is a living museum, with exhibits spanning three wars and five decades of service.
USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park. The U.S.S. Bowfin (SS-287) is one of the 288 U.S. submarines that carried out the war in the Pacific during World War II. Explore the 10,000 square foot submarine museum to learn about the battle under the seas. A tour of the grounds will take you to a Waterfront Memorial honoring submariners lost in WWII as well as interactive gun and torpedo exhibits.
Pacific Aviation Museum. Located within former WWII airplane hangars on Pearl Harbor's Ford Island, the Pacific Aviation Museum is an immersive aviation museum complete with interactive simulators and exhibits showcasing the stories behind authentic WWII fighter planes and bombers.
USS Oklahoma Memorial. Dedicated on December 7th, 2007, the USS Oklahoma Memorial honors the 429 crewmen who lost their lives in the Pearl Harbor attack. Approximately nine torpedoes hit "The Okie," capsizing this 35,000-ton battleship in only twelve minutes.
