If you have an article that you'd like published in What's Up please see the, St. James POA Communications Policy.

A key change in our policy now allows non-profit organizations that have a St. James sponsor or a chairperson for a function to place a 100 word article in What's Up? only.

The organization must send proof of their non-profit status to The POA.  Details are contained in the policy.

If you have articles for What's Up, please email them to What's Up by the Friday prior to publication in order to get them into What's Up?.  What's Up is published the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month.  Please indicate in the subject line or in the body of the email that the information is for What's Up?  Failure to have What's Up in the subject line may prevent your emails from getting into the newsletter.

St. James Pool League
Yes... the Pool League in St. James is alive and well. Currently composed of 10 teams, we are entering into our 3rd year.

The game is 8 ball.  It is an open format with 9 games played  each night.  We play in the homes of pool players that have tables. You do not have to have a table to play but new tables are always welcome.

Games are held Thursdays. Team members will not play on every scheduled date as we rotate team players as needed. The league runs from October-April. Men and women are invited to play.

President Frans Kuipers remains adament about keeping the games friendly but still competitive. Everyone in the league agrees that win or lose, the objective is to have some fun around the
pool table.

We are currently looking to expand the  league.   If you are are interested, call Scott Baldwin at 253-1497 or Frans Kuipers at 454-0933.

Sign Up for Dinner for 5/6

Have you signed up for Dinner for 5/6? There's still time! Registration for the fall series closes August 1. Meeting new people has never been easier. Just send your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address to Ann Day at joeday@atmc.net or call her at 253-8550. Participating couples will be sent a schedule and list of couples shortly after registration. Subs are also needed.

St. James P.R.I.D.E.

Join your eco-minded, beach-loving neighbors and help St. James P.R.I.D.E. with its Clean the Beach program. The date is Saturday, July 14, after the July 4th celebration (a time when the beach gets pretty nasty).

What will our volunteers do that day? Remove litter from the Beach Club parking lot, access streets, and beachfront. We'll also remove vegetative debris and dump it behind the dunes. A few of us will pick-up those pesky, toe-stubbing rocks.

Dress is beach casual and followed immediately by a pizza party. Clean-up time: 9-10:30 a.m.

Please pre-register for this event so we can order the right number of pizzas. P.R.I.D.E. also supplies bottled water and limited tools. Plan to bring your own work gloves and rake. To register to help contact either Sandy Cherry (sandy.cherry@gmail.com) or Steve Cherry (scherry3@ec.rr.com) or call us at 910-253-9022 with questions.

En Plein Air

Start your day Friday, July 6, and Saturday, July 7, by stopping by the St. James Marina to see our artisans at work en plein air. From 9 a.m.-noon each day, you have the opportunity to observe and interact with artists creating their art.

This popular Artisan's event has a Kid's Korner with face painting and hands on activities for the younger folks. New this year is "Find your Inner Artist," a place for adults to try their hand at creating their own art. Our participating artists should provide plenty of inspiration.

Painters will be working in various mediums, as well as transdigital art. See a work in pastels as it is created. Watch a potter at the wheel, a sculptor at work and check out pyrographic engraving, wreath-making , and crafting of jewelry pieces and tile inlays in trays and tables. Mark your calendar so you don't miss this special part of the Fourth of July holiday week.

Hope Harbor Home

Food for Thought

Hope Harbor Home, Brunswick County's only shelter for victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault, has recently had its funding from FEMA cut.  Brunswick County is no longer poor enough for Hope Harbor Home to qualify for emergency funds for food from FEMA for the women and children it shelters.

Domestic violence is not the pretty picture we want to think about in this beautiful place we have chosen to call home - but it exists.

Mary Page, John Goldsworth and I are all St. James residents and Hope Harbor Home board members.

CARDS FOR CARING is a program that we have devised to help make up the $7,500 deficit left by the lack of FEMA funds. A gift card from Lowe's, Food Lion, Wal-Mart, HT or wherever you shop and in any amount that is comfortable will make a difference.  These cards will be used by shelter management to purchase food only for our clients.

During the month of July you can drop your cards at the home of Mary Page at 3659 Wingfoot Drive or with me at 3315 Sparkleberry Court. Thanks you in advance for your caring.

I consider myself lucky to call St.James home.

Respectfully,
Nita Robertson
Board President, Hope Harbor Home

Hope Harbor Home is a private nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.

A big thank you to all who donated to C.I.S. Summer Camp Supplies

Thanks to all who donated yarn, fabric, paper towel tubes, plastic bags and other supplies for the C.I.S. Summer Camp program. Special appreciation goes to Karen Wall, Denise York, Carol Szot, Barbara Edwards, Betty Lewis, Kathy DeLeo, and Christine Noble who agreed to have their front porches be drop-off points for the last month. The campers at the Communities In Schools program will have fun using all the supplies. -Sande DelColle

Fall Bow Fundraiser needs your help

Bonnie Westbrook and Stephanie Macaluso, co-chairmen of the Fall Bow fundraiser, are looking for volunteers in the Aug. to Oct. timeframe. They need neighborhood captains and distribution workers to deliver order forms from late August to September 10 and then put up bows from Sept. 28-Oct. 4. Please contact either Bonnie (269-4357, jimbonw@msn.com) or Stephanie (805-2893) to volunteer. Money raised will support Brunswick County nonprofits that focus on children, such as Waves 4 Kids, Matthew's Ministry, CIS, and others determined by the executive committee of the Service Club.

Want to see Sandy Hackett's The Rat Pack or The Women of Ireland

Consider subscribing to the Odell Williamson Performing Arts Series at Brunswick Community College for the coming year. Here is the cheapest way to sign up: For the past 14 years, St. James resident Bob Schwartz has taken it upon himself to purchase season tickets to all eight shows at a group rate.

The cost for the coming year will be $145 per ticket, as opposed to an individual price of about $25 for each show. Because Bob secures the tickets through group sales, he turns over all the profit to the St. James Service Club which in turn goes back to nonprofits in Brunswick County. To find out who will be performing in 2012-2013, log on to the Odell Williamson website (http://bccowa.com/20112012DESCRIBE.html).

Bob must turn in the order by July 8. If you wish to order tickets for this next year, make out a check for $145 for each ticket, payable to the St. James Service Club and mail to, Bob Schwartz, 3437 Beaver Creek Drive, Southport, NC 28461. Bob makes no money off of this endeavor and organizes the group ticket sales just because he wants to give back to our community. For more information, call Bob at 253-8817.

Did you know that the Service Club is selling White House Ornaments?

Please contact Frances Carlsen (253-9131, darfran@earthlink.net) or Kay Gallotta (253-9893, kayspt@ec.rr.com) before the end of August to let them know how many ornaments you would like to purchase at $20 each. Let your friends in the community know about this too. Any money raised after the ornaments are paid for will go to the Service Club to support nonprofits in Brunswick County.

First, a thank to the St. James Community for its support of the Rally for the Cure. For the past 13 years the tournament has been held in July. We've made a change, setting the 2012 date for the event during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year the Rally for the Cure will be held Tuesday, October 16.

Let's also Rock for the Cure. Mike's Garage Band will be playing for your listening and dancing pleasure on the evening of Saturday, October 13, to benefit this breast cancer fundraising effort.

The planning committee will soon begin its work. Anyone who would like to support this project by giving time, goods, or services is asked to contact Carol Kidd at 253-3532 or carolskis@earthlink.net.
Watch for more details coming soon.
