If you have an article that you'd like published in What's Up please see the, St. James POA Communications Policy.    

A key change in our policy now allows non-profit organizations that have a St. James sponsor or a chairperson for a function to place a 100 word article in What's Up? only.    

The organization must send proof of their non-profit status to The POA.  Details are contained in the policy.   

If you have articles for What's Up, please email them to What's Up by the Friday prior to publication in order to get them into What's Up?.  What's Up is published the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month.  Please indicate in the subject line or in the body of the email that the information is for What's Up?  Failure to have What's Up in the subject line may prevent your emails from getting into the newsletter.

Greetings!

 

Today is the day we pause to remember the millions of women and men who paid the ultimate price in defense of our country and liberty both at home and around the world.  Many who served did so in civilian clothes under conditions where they could not wear a uniform and whose names we may know.

 

Recently St. James dedicated a memorial to those who served in our Armed Forces.  When I located the brick bearing the name Col Charles E. Nicholas, USMC it was very hard to keep my emotions in check as I remembered my father and strangely enough, my mother. She too served  to keep the family together while my father was off in a foreign theater as did many other wives and mothers.  

 

President Abraham Lincoln closed his 2nd Inaugural address with the following words.  Let us strive to live them out today, tomorrow and always.

 

"With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."

 

On a closing note, my time as editor of What's Up has come to an end.  I want to thank Carol Szot and the POA for the opportunity to serve as editor for the last two years.

Save the Date - June 9th Beach Party

Saturday, June 9th is the first of St. James Beach parties sponsored by the St. James Activities Committee.  Bring your beverage, plates/napkins/silverware, and a hearty appetizer to share with 20.  Spend a fun evening with friends and D.J. Archie Witty from 5:30 to 8:30.  There is no cost for this event.  See you there!

Friday June 8th   2:00pm-6:00pm and Saturday June 9th 10:00 am-2:00pm

The tour will provide you an opportunity to see a variety of gardens throughout St. James Plantation

Ticket Price $10

Ticket sales schedule:

Wednesday, May 30th 11:00am-1:00 pm Member Club Drive-Thru;

Wednesday, June 6th 2-4pm Members Club Drive-Thru.

Tickets will also be sold at the first garden located at 3795 Ridge Crest Drive on both Friday June 8th and Saturday June 9th   If you are paying by check please make it payable to the St. James Service Club.

4th Annual Jimbo and Ruth Smith Golf Classic 

 

The Fourth Annual Jimbo and Ruth Smith Golf Classic held on Wednesday, May 9th at The Members Club was hugely successful, raising, after expenses, $25,000 to go toward the purchase of needed equipment used on medical mission projects in the Dominican Republic with Medical Ministry International. This included a $6000 donation from the Dorothy and Kenneth Heisler Foundation to go toward the purchase of a new bus to replace the 31 year old vehicle currently in use and disrepair.  Jimbo and Ruth Smith, and MMI, are so very grateful for the support the Golf Classic has received over the years from the St. James Community, and especially this year.

Mah Jongg Lessons

 

American Mah Jongg lessons for beginners only will be offered once again at the St. James Community Center, in Room 3. The series of four lessons will take place on Tuesday, June 5,12,19,and 26,  from 12:30 until 3:30pm.  These lessons are free and are open to men and women.  However, all learners must pre-register and must commit to attend ALL four classes.  Each participant must have the Official 2012 National Mah Jongg League playing card by the first class. The card may be obtained online from www.nationalmahjonggleague.org . St. James Small Business Association

 

The St. James Small Business Association monthly meeting is Wednesday, June 6th at the St. James Community Center.  Networking begins at 4:00 pm followed by the meeting from 4:30 - 5:30 pm.  Doug Mieden of Carolina Business and Tax Advisors will be speaking on "Sales Made Simple".  The seminar will cover skills that will sharpen selling skills.
