Patriotic Bows and Flags are coming soon!

Sometime between May 6th and May 8th your neighborhood representative will be removing the purple bow from your mailbox and replacing it with the patriotic bow and flag. These blue bows and flags are displayed in support of the military men and women that serve in the armed forces. This is the only annual fundraiser for Operation At Ease and it allows OAE to host approximately 48 military families per year for a weekend of fun and relaxation in St. James. To date over 1,430 bows have been sold through the St. James Service Club. But, it is not too late to purchase one if you missed out. Simply make a check payable to the St. James Service Club for $10 (or pay cash) and put it in an envelope with your name, address and phone number and leave it on Cindi Neumann's porch, 3510 Members Club Blvd. or on Elaine Faver's porch at 4397 Hibiscus Court. At the appropriate time we will deliver the bows to the address given.  Thank you for your continued support. The residents and property owners of St. James are the best!

Relay For LIFE
  Relay for Life

COME WALK WITH TEAM ST. JAMES!!!

Event:                 Relay For Life Cancer Walk

Dates:                 May 4-5, 2012

Starting Time:    6:00 PM

Location:             West Brunswick H.S. Shallotte

Team Captains:  Susan Sturgill and Annetta Clark

Come join this community event by walking laps around the track with many of your friends and neighbors or just come out and show your support for TEAM ST. JAMES. Our tent will be at the far end of the football field and we will have games, refreshments and lots of laughs. Mr. Robert Duffy of St. James Properties, LLC, has provided a "Team St. James Cap" for all Team Members to wear with our Relay For Life tee shirts. So please remember to wear both to the Relay and show your TEAM ST. JAMES spirit.

If you haven't ordered your LUMINARIES yet, there is still time. Just email Susan Sturgill at jssturgill@ec.rr.com or call 253-1432 and request an order form. The cost is $10.00 for each luminary and checks should be made payable to the American Cancer Society. Just drop off your check and order form to her at the address on the bottom of the form.

Beginning at 4:30 PM on Friday, May 4th, there will be a small reception for all cancer survivors. We would like all St. James survivors to gather on the bleachers around 5:30 PM to have a group photo taken, prior to the larger county survivor photograph.

The opening ceremony will begin around 6:00 PM and the Survivor or Opening Lap starts at 6:15 PM.   After the Survivor Lap, we would like all the St. James survivors and team members to come over to the tent so that a group photograph can be taken. Following the Survivor Lap, there will be musical entertainment until the Luminary Ceremony begins at 9:00 PM. This is a very moving ceremony and at this time, the lights will be dimmed and hundreds of luminaries will be lit.

Later in the evening, there will be a "Womanless Beauty Pageant", which always brings lots of smiles and laughter. There will be people walking on the track all Friday night and Saturday morning. Closing ceremonies will begin around 11:30 AM on Saturday, May 5th.

Let's have a lot of fun at this year's Relay and lots of prayers for nice weather would also be appreciated. Hope to see you there!!!!!

 POA NEWS

On the Roads

Each year, when we begin the roads work, we get questions of "When my Road?" Below is a general answer for that question.

We are frequently asked when a specific street or road will be resurfaced.  Most of the time, we are unable to forecast a specific road's scheduled resurfacing.

Our roads maintenance program is based a an eight year cycle.  Each year, we will do one eighth of the roads based on mileage - more or less.  In 2010 and 2011, roads were selected based on condition of some problem roads.  Our goal has been to resurface an entire neighborhood area and in 2012, for the first time, we will be able to do this in the Trailwood / Harbormaster / Pinecrest area.  Hopefully, we'll continue in this fashion in the future though continuing to identify problem areas and addressing them with patch and resurface as required.

The roads to be resurfaced are determined in the fourth quarter of the prior year.  Again, this is based on condition and available funds for the coming year staying within the general strategy of a neighborhood area at a time.  We do not predict specific resurfacing targets beyond the coming year.

St. James P.R.I.D.E. Seeks Volunteers

Research shows that cleaner roadways have a several benefits: 1-people are less likely to throw things out of their car windows if the roadways are well-kept; 2-the perceived value of the community is increased (i.e., desirability of living there, home valuations, etc.); 3-less food garbage means fewer animals foraging and ending up as roadkill; and 4-reducing cigarette butt litter means less opportunity for accidental fires. Nature, your home and the environment are protected in all of these.
