A FIRST FOR ST. JAMES

The 7.5 Women's Super Senior Combo Tennis Team from St. James, won the Southern Sectional Championship in Mobile, Alabama, the weekend of March 2nd through March 4th.  This is the first time a tennis team from St. James has won at sectionals.  The team, captained by Cheryl Matsche, won their division 3 - 1.  The finals came down to a nail-biting win over the other division winner, South Carolina's, Hilton Head team, and St. James prevailed 2 - 1.

This tournament is recognized as the largest tournament in the world by player count with about 1900 players.

Other members of the team that travelled to Mobile are Faye Curry, Carol Scott, Barbara McMichael, Karen MacKinnon, Janice Ammann, Margie Foote, Jan Peiler and Pat Stephenson.  Members that contributed during the regular season and the state finals, but were unable to go to Mobile were,  Ann Perry, Suzanne Frakes and Kathy Fowlkes.

Racquet Relay - Tennis Charitable Event

We are pleased to announce our charitable fund-raising event for 2012. The Racquet Relay's beneficiary this year will be the Brunswick Family Assistance Agency.  We are holding a 12-hour 'Racquet Relay' from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, April 11th at the St. James Founders Courts. The rain date is Friday, April 13 at the same time and place.

This event is open for either Doubles or Singles, and there is a minimum of $10/hour/person contribution requested for doubles or $20/hour/person for singles play. The event is non-competitive, so any combination of skills, genders or age categories is encouraged. You may play as often as you like, paying the minimum contribution rate for each court-hour and with as many different partners as you wish.

Racquet Relay is an 'open' event so guest fees will be waived. Feel free to encourage your USTA or BCTA teams to participate in this most worthwhile fundraiser for The Brunswick Family Assistance Agency.  If you do not have a partner or opponent, the St. James tennis pro-shop will help you find one.

Brunswick Family Assistance Agency provides emergency assistance and other programs to low income families and individuals as a result of donated money, food, and clothing, and by the countless hours of work donated by their volunteers.

Reservations are going fast. Reserve your court time now! Sign up at the St. James Tennis Pro Shop 253-3008 Ext 6. Please make checks payable to the Brunswick Family Assistance Agency. (Non-playing donations will also be accepted)

 St. James P.R.I.D.E.

St. James P.R.I.D.E. Seeks Volunteers

Research shows that cleaner roadways have a several benefits: 1-people are less likely to throw things out of their car windows if the roadways are well-kept; 2-the perceived value of the community is increased (i.e., desirability of living there, home valuations, etc.); 3-less food garbage means fewer animals foraging and ending up as roadkill; and 4-reducing cigarette butt litter means less opportunity for accidental fires. Nature, your home and the environment are protected in all of these.

Our volunteers will remove litter from 2-miles of Hwy. 211 this coming Saturday (March 3rd) starting at 9:00 am. We are usually done by 10:30 am. For more information or to pre-register to help, just send an e-mail to either Steve Cherry (scherry3@ec.rr.com) or Sandy Cherry (sandy.cherry@gmail.com) or call us at 910-253-9022.

Clean The Highway is our flagship litter removal program. We do this 4-5 times per year.

St. James Fire Department

 SJFD Welcomes New Members

Your St. James Fire Department is pleased to announce the acquisition of seven new members to its ranks. Five members have joined the fire side and two have joined the Emergency Medical Service.

Marty Perry and Jim Daly have graduated from a year's worth of training and have passed the North Carolina State qualifying tests for Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B). Neither gentleman has had any previous emergency medical experience.

Peter Braun, Ed Friedrich, Bob Jenkins, George Larson, and Cleve Murphy have joined the ranks of the fire fighters. Ed and Cleve have both had previous fire fighting experience but have been inactive for upwards of 15 years.

All seven gentlemen indicated they joined the SJFD because they wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to give back to their community and support it in the most substantial way they could find. They are very proud to have completed their respective training curricula and are pleased to now be ready to serve their community. They also expressed how pleased they were to find that the level of professionalism in both services was so high. They realized they were joining a very professional and dedicated group of ladies and gentlemen.

The next time you see any of these men, take the opportunity to congratulate them on their accomplishments and express how pleased you are to have them protecting your life and your property.

If you are interested in joining the St. James Fire Department, feel free to drop in and visit with Chief John Dahill or call 253-9990 for an appointment.
