Greetings!

It has been a week of extremes out in the Reserve, intense heat followed by powerful storms that have left many without power. Last week saw a disappointing outcome from the Barnesville Oaks hearing, followed by a spot of good news from Frederick County on the Global Mission Church development. Read on for all the details.

Hot or wet, good news or bad, the harvest season is in full swing, last weekend's farm tour was a smashing success but by no means the only time to enjoy the bountiful produce and boundless beauty of the Reserve. Bite into a perfectly ripe peach and you will agree, local food just tastes better. Check out our local food links to grab the best food of the season.

And speaking of farming, September 21st is the Park and Planning Board hearing on Child Lots, MCA has been working with the County to close loopholes that allow child lots to be used for purposes other than intended, to ensure that families can continue to farm throughout the generations. Please save the date to attend this hearing, your presence and testimony would go a long way to moving this issue forward.

Also Important:  MCA is in the midst of our membership drive.  Quite simply:  We can't do all we do without your help.  Please take a moment and join today!  Take a tour of our website to see more about what keeps us so busy!

Barnesville Oaks Public Hearing Summary
MoCo Planning Board approves inappropriate development on largest remaining farm parcel in the County.
By a 4-1 vote, the subdivision called Barnesville Oaks was approved at the most recent Planning Board Meeting.
For more information on the hearing and background on Barnesville Oaks, click here.

Although this decision is a disappointment, this issue is by no means over, we have an opportunity to file a motion to reconsider within 10 days of the written decision. There is every reason to take this step. MCA staff is compiling information needed to make the filing.

To this end, MCA and Sugarloaf Citizen's Association have retained a law firm to represent the Reserve and local community in this matter. Please consider a targeted donation to the legal fund. Make a note: "Barnesville Oaks legal fund."

Frederick County Court Upholds FredCo Planning Commission Denial of GMC's Water and Sewer Plan Amendment
Frederick County Circuit Court has affirmed that GMC must work within the 5,000 gallons/day septic capacity and can not amend the Countywide Water and Sewer plan to fit their over-sized intentions for their proposed site. With this decision, it seems more likely then ever that the site plan will be denied.

Local Farming and Local Food:
  The Reason behind the Reserve!
MCA is working hard to ensure that more farmers have the tools they need to get started on the ground in Montgomery County...and succeed.  Read  about the plan, a public/private partnership,  to start an "incubator farm" aimed at growing the next generation of local farmers!
