Greetings!
German Roaches vs Palmetto Bugs German roaches are very slender probably not over three fourths of an inch long and marked by 2 definitive black stripes on the shield (pronotum) right behind and covering head. Palmetto bug, Periplaneta (many species), are large even as nymphs probably almost as wide in abdomen as German roaches are long, more reddish-brown in color and grow to easily 2 inches. Palmetto bugs typically are outdoor, but come inside most often when weather changes make outside less desirable. They may breed indoors but that is the exception not the rule I would say. German roaches are strictly indoor creatures now, living inside and leaving egg cases in many cracks and crevices. They like to be inside appliances it seems too, like blenders, radios, etc. where it is warmer. Keeping Periplaneta outside means having good stiff door slides, weatherstriping around doors and windows, sealing cracks and crevices. One may walk in but deal with it mechanically (flyswatter, shoe). Germans are brought in usually in cardboard boxes paper bags, etc., and utilize those stored things as places to hide and do their behaviors under cover, when not exploring house at night. Baits work on both, but remove clutter if you have a German infestation. If you treat but don't follow through with clean up, and follow up then the roaches will return quickly and sanitation is always a help!
