A Pipe Dream Come True!
Organist Ray Ebert |
On Tuesday, September 28, Centenary will present Dr. Charles G. Vardell, Jr.'s "Sonata for Organ" at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary.
The Sonata, which won first prize in a statewide competition in the early 1920s, has been performed only one other time, in 1993, as one in a series of American Guild of Organists-sponsored recitals of Vardell's organ music-the occasion marked the 100th anniversary of Vardell's birth.
The recital will feature Centenary organist Ray Ebert who is retiring at the end of this year after forty years of masterful service as Centenary's beloved organist. The event will also welcome Vardell's daughter, Margaret Vardell Sandresky, who was Centenary's organist through the 1960's and is an accomplished and internationally recognized composer. She will talk about her father and his sonata to begin the evening.
This program is co-sponsored by Centenary's Music and the Arts Ministry and the Winston-Salem Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. The Moravian Music Foundation, which holds copies of Dr. Vardell's complete works, has graciously provided Centenary with the unpublished Organ Sonata for the September 28 recital.
The recital is free and open to the public. Parking will be available on 5th, 4th and 4 ½ Street within close proximity to the church campus. Church buses and vans will be directed to the 4th Street parking lot, but can unload passengers at the Sanctuary Entrance (5th Street).
For more information about the recital call Centenary's Business Office (397-1343). |
