Greetings!
Like all of you, we are deeply saddened by the horrific events and stories coming out of Japan. If you would like to donate anything to the amazing people of Japan, please click here. This is a direct link through the USAID.Gov website, and we are not affiliated with it anyway, other than we just want to help. Our prayers and thoughts are with all those who are affected by this tragedy. Deep in the hills of Kohala, the Menehunes have been hard at work putting the final touches on our new and updated website. Much more interactive with up-to-date specials, and a whole lot more. If you are unfamiliar with the facts behind being King and Queen members, you'll want to read about the awesome benefits that come your way. And for those of you who are members, we've got some exciting wines for you this month, available only to you during March. Come by or call us to set up a delivery of your monthly wines.
Ever arrive at Lighthouse Delicatessen at 4:15 only to see the tables being brought in and the windows hung? We are happy to announce we are now open until 6pm...every day but Sunday, when we will still close at 4pm. Time to pull out the calendar and mark it up! In our Calendar of Events section, a few fun things happening this month at Lighthouse Liquors so be sure to mark the calendar in red. Think you know random trivia? Our Did You Know section shares some humorous facts we've found in the past month. Feeling lucky? Check out this month's photo in our Where in the World?!? section. We encourage people to take pictures with their Lighthouse Liquors gear anywhere they go and we will use a new one each newsletter for this fun game. We appreciate the reviews and positive feedback on the wide range of social networks we belong to. If you haven't yet, be sure to stop by some of the sites we've landed on and let your voice be heard by millions of people! Finally, we would once again like to express our deepest appreciation to you for helping make Lighthouse Liquors and Lighthouse Delicatessen shine. Much Aloha and Cheers ~ Your Lighthouse Crew

Prepare for Launch... WebSite 2.0
While traveling deep in the back forests of Kohala, we discovered some Menehunes hanging out drinking some of our tasty libations. After sharing what we had, they agreed to help us create the updated version of our website. They've been hard at work and we're about ready to launch our new site.
If you have not been to our website, it includes information for both the Liquor Store and the Deli. From menus, the latest specials, to random bits of trivia, archived newsletters, and everything in between, this site is chock full of good information.
In the next week and every week after that, we'll be highlighting a Special Deli discounted sandwich. In order to find out the special, bookmark our site for easy access.
We would also like to thank Randy Botti, walaadude, for his dedication in training those Menehunes how to type. |
Beer and Wine Specials
One of the reasons we are fans of Sierra Nevada is the diversity of the styles of beer they brew. We have been fortunate to snag even more of the Celebration Ale and so we want to pass the hoppiness on to you. Don't be fooled by the winter scene on the bottle, this beer just tastes better every day. This sale won't last forever... 12packs for only $14.95 are available both cold for now or unchilled for long term storage.
We discovered an article in the Wine Enthusiast where it highlighted beers people should not miss. One of those was the Napa Smith Amber...which of course has a place in our coolers. In fact, ALL of our Napa Smiths are currently on sale so come down and check out our amazing selection.
Finally in the beer department, if you've noticed a ridiculously large Rogue amongst the larger format beers, it's not a mutation...it's the new Dead Guy Growler. This is a great package and an unbelievable beer inside. If you haven't tried the Dead Guy yet, we are curious what you have been doing with your time...get off the couch!
Let's wine a bit shall we? We have a bunch of tasty wines on sale and we wanted you to know the amazing prices on them.
Surfrider 2008 Chardonnay

Want to spend a little more? Skull, which has gotten 100 points in ratings, is a steal at $102.85. The fun label is only the beginning because what's under the cork is what got the points... Truly a special and limited edition of this magical wine.

King and Queen Member Wine
This month's royalty wine Queen Membership
Antinori Orvieto Campogrande 2009 Straw-yellow in color with lime green hues. Elegant and refined, with aromas of tropical fruits and floral notes. A full-bodied Orvieto, luscious and soft on the palate. 40% Procanico; 40% Grechetto; 15% Verdello; 5% Drupeggio & Malvasia Cote du Crow 2008 This Rhone-style blend has a rich ruby red color, highlighted with purple edges. Black cherry, blackberry pie, leather and spicy aromas jump out of the glass. The wine is medium-bodied with soft tannins; it offers a mouthful of red berry and cherry, along with sweet spice, red currant and a bit of toasty oak. Its weight and balance make it a perfect pairing with anything off the grill. King Membership (the above two, plus...) Luna 2008 Napa County, Pinot Grigio The 2008 Pinot Grigio is a pale golden color. The nose is scented with grapefruit and pear, and on the palate citrus come to the forefront. Mango and orange zest are accented by notes of guava and a pronounced minerality. The wonderful acidity and full-bodied texture carry through a delicious lemony finish with hints of apricot. Ironclad Man O'War 2008, Waiheke Island, New Zealand The 2008 Ironclad is a blend of 52% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc, 10.5% Malbec, 9.1% Petit Verdot and 1.4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Not only is Waiheke Island gorgeous, but they are growing some incredible grapes! This wine is built with the Merlot component providing the fruit softness and lifted berry fruit aromas, the Cabernet Franc adding fragrant earthy notes and a sinewy structure. Malbec brings ripe tannins and intense floral aromas while the Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon add density and tannin weight to the wine. The blend draws all the elements of the five varieties together resulting in a complex aroma profile of cassis and red summer berries, earthy undertones with a touch of floral fragrance, tarmac and leather all framed within a mix of predominantly French oak and a small component of American oak.
If you've gotten this far and you haven't tried our Wine Program, this should be the month you try something new. There are no long contracts and you can cancel anytime...where else can you find that? You will find yourself not only enjoying the exciting wines we share each month, but also the additional savings with higher discounts! Go ahead, ask us about it. |
Lighthouse Delicatessen Longer hours, special offers and mmmmm bacon
After hearing from you all, we decided it was time to extend our hours. We are now open until 6pm Monday through Saturday and 4pm on Sunday! That's right, now you can swing by after work and pick up a little something for dinner or just stop in for a beer and a pretzel.
With the launch of our new website, be sure to bookmark it so you can check it often. We'll be offering weekly specials which will only be mentioned on the site. So be sure to check it often!
Sunday morning, you wake up, the sun is shining (or it's raining) and the emptiness of the stomach is growling at you like a ferocious beast. Fortunately, the Delicatessen opens at 9am for a killer Sunday brunch. Sip a mimosa or a cold beer as we prepare one of the different types of Eggs Benedict, french toast or fresh quiches for you. Of course bacon or sausage helps Sunday mornings... |
Sierra Dinner Review...
Don't be sad if you missed it, there'll be more
The curtains were up, the tablecloths out and tables set for the first beer-pairing dinner at Lighthouse Delicatessen, featuring Sierra Nevada beer. As each guest arrived they were greeted with a frosty pint of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and a smile from the staff. This was going to be a great night.
It all began with the idea that everyone is fairly familiar with the idea of a wine-pairing dinner. However, here at Lighthouse, we do our best to do things a little differently. In case you were unaware, we are big fans of Sierra Nevada beers and thought; let's begin there.

After looking over the wide range of Sierra beers we carry at Lighthouse Liquors, Chris and Rick created a menu that would not only be unbelievably delicious, but also highlight nuances of each beer.
Once everyone had settled into their seats and finished off their Pale Ales, the first course started to pour out of the Delicatessen kitchen. Our friend Rob, from Sierra, shared the secret of pouring the Kellerweis into the glass. Pour a little, swill the bottle, pour a little more, swill the bottle, and pour some more until your glass is full.
In this first course, the Kellerweis was paired with chilled potato leek soup served in our homemade pretzel bowl. The flavors of the soup brought out some of the unique qualities of the beer and everyone was thrilled, and there were no remaining pretzel bowls when the plates were cleared.
The salad course was a unique blend of our house-roasted pork loin with baked pumpkin and local greens. The beer was the #4 30th Anniversary Grand Cru, which of course was on tap, and was out of this world. The Grand Cru held up to the spiciness of the pork and sweetness of the pumpkin...
The main course of Pierogi's and bratwurst was served with Sierra's Porter. Wow. Some people can be intimidated by the darkness of a porter, but as Rob says, "don't be afraid of the dark." The flavors together were scrumptious and there wasn't an empty glass or anything left on the plates.
How could we top off this amazing dinner? Well, by going over-the-top of course! The #1 30th Anniversary Stout with ice cream and raspberries. No, not side-by-side, but think Root Beer Float, with an amazing stout and homemade ice cream in a tall glass. YUM!

It was a great evening, we really want to thank everyone for attending and especially to Rob DeKerkel for all the information and goodies he brought and shared with the group of beer lovers.
Bummed you missed it? That's ok because we are just getting started with fun dinners like this one and there will be more! If you have a suggestion or would like to create your own beer/wine dinner, please contact us and we can begin planning the fun with you.
