Aloha Members!
It's been a fun two weeks here in Hawi and things are only warming up as summer begins! Last Tuesday, we had a great turn out for the Wine Tasting with Kristin from Chambers and Chambers, thank you all for coming. Before that, King Kamehameha Day brought a lot of new faces to the Lighthouse and it's always nice to meet new friends!
We have also received a number of new great wines and beers since you've last heard from us. Some of the highlights include the Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Batch #2 and Sierra's Southern Harvest. The Harvest sold out during the tasting last month, so make sure to come in and secure some today! Sam Adams has also delivered some very special and limited beers. First the Longshot, which consists of two bottles each of the three winners in the 2009 Sam Adams American Homebrew Contest! Mile High Barleywine, Lemon Pepper Saison and Old Ben Ale makes up this year's edition. The second from Sam Adams is the Coastal Wheat, it's hazy and golden in color, and has a fresh twist on the popular Hefeweizen style. The citrus from the lemons balances out the character, resulting in a crisp and refreshing wheat beer. And just for fun, we're having a Sam Adams Educational Tasting Seminar in mid-July!
Now, kick back, open a beer or a bottle of wine and read what's the latest from your Lighthouse Crew.

Blind Tasting at Members' House
A few spots left...

If you were a part of last month's blind-tasting, then you surely you'll want to come to this one tonight. If you missed it, then don't miss this one. There are only a few spots left and is shaping up to be a great time.
We'll be tasting a variety of white wines and the theme for the Reds is New World Wines! New World wines are those wines produced outside the traditional wine-growing areas of Europe, in particular from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States. YUM!
The start time for the event is 6pm and the member's house is right in Kapa'au. We ask if you're coming, to bring some Pupus to share.
Please call the store (889-0505) or email LighthouseLiquorsHI@gmail.com to reserve your spot!

Summer's Here, Try some Rose' today! Marci shares her thoughts on this delicious Rose'...

If you've ever been given advice from my partners Bobby & Chris, then you know that they KNOW wine. Me, all I know is that I like to drink it. But I'm learning. And since I'm on this Brave Mission to Learn I've got the perfect excuse to, well, drink a lot of new wines. And with that, I'm trying to branch out and try a color other than white. So Rosé it is! Weeee!
This Argentinian wine is a darker pink than other rosés I've seen, which is a first clue to its robustness. At first the Crios is floral and fresh - but it's only the first sip, which of course will be followed by another sip and another - and then I taste strawberries and cherries, with a little spice. I have a crush on this new wine! And what a wonderful coincidence that I live in Hawaii, because it goes well with warm-weather meals, and also with meals where there might be a mix of foods that go with both red & white wines. In other words: the best of middlemen. The Crios is a charming liaison, a fair & dutiful mediator in the center of a table that would otherwise be at war! How gallant and selfless this wine is.
Salud! Marci

Out and About on the East Coast... Bobby returns from the Far East with observations and Recipes!...ok, just New York and Vermont
I love my Lighthouse Partners. As they continued building the Deli and providing customers with knowledge and delicious beverages at the Liquor Store, I went to the East Coast for my annual trip to spend time with my father. (see story below)
Feeling the need to do my part while I was away, I did my best to sample unique beers, cocktails and wines, and go into as many liquor stores and delis as possible. It was a tough assignment, and I did the best I could.
The first was Manchester Discount Beverage and Deli in Manchester, Vermont. My friend Randy owns this gem of a store which carries a ton of great wines (at great prices), a brilliant beer selection that makes Rick weep and of course, tasty sandwiches. The beer selection reminds me of our store a lot, in that when people come into Lighthouse, they marvel at the choices in such a small town. Everything from Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) to rare Rogues, in this little town in Vermont they like their beer.
I stocked up on a few different styles of DogFish Head Beer and Stone Brewery to bring home to my partners. (we are currently lobbying these guys to ship to Hawaii....) Randy's store is about twice the size of ours, and yet I always get the same warm greeting and help from the knowledgeable staff. In this world of Costco's and Big Box Liquor Stores, nothing can replace these community-based stores and their growing selection of boutique beers.
On the drive down to New York, I usually stop at the Townshend Market for a sandwich and some munchies. I was happily surprised to see that they too had gotten on the boutique Beer train. No longer just offering Labatts or PBR, this market was sharing with their community the diversity and deliciousness of hand-crafted brews. I made notes of some of the names and now we're trying to get some of those unique beers shipped to Hawaii.
Then in New York City, I spent my time wandering from liquor store to deli to liquor store to deli... (mostly observing!) However at one roof-top bar, they offered a White Sangria and a Hudson Mojito. Of course, I was drinking a Stella Artois, but got to taste these two treats and have included the recipes because they were mind-blowing and we have all the ingredients here at Lighthouse: White Sangria; Pear Vodka, St. Germain, VOGA Sauvignon Blanc and fresh berries...simple and delicious. Hudson Mojito; Bacardi White Rum, Fresh Mint, Farm Fresh Strawberries, Lime and Club Soda...remember to crush the mint!
The trip was fast and fun, but as I like to say, my favorite part about going on "vacation" is coming home to Kohala.
Cya Soon! B.

Calendar Of Events
What is happening in Hawi...
* June 29th, Summer Spirits Tasting 4-6pm! On Tuesday, June 29th, Mark Liberato, from Southern Wine and Spirits, is going to be pouring a wide range of ready-to-drink cocktails here. Loads of fun will be had so don't miss this exciting event.
* July 2nd-5th, Kohala Reunion Weekend Our town is going to get a little crowded this 4th of July weekend with the arrival of past residents, friends and family of Kohala. If you're going to be having your Ohana visit for the weekend, remember we deliver, but also, ORDER your KEGS early. Having a keg around not only makes economic and environmental sense, but it will ensure you will have plenty of beer for all those friends who will show up.
* Mid-July, date TBA, Sam Adams Tasting We are working out the final details with our Sam Adams friends to allow you to sample a wide range of beer that this old brewery offers through Lighthouse Liquors. We'll keep you in the loop
 * July/August, Lighthouse Delicatessen You've heard the sounds of drilling screws and the pounding of nails but we're now getting closer to saying the Delicatessen will be opening soon. We are hard at work getting our menu organized and waiting for the final equipment to be installed. Our goal is to have our Grand Opening on August 1st! We are starting to crank up the equipment that is working and are producing some wonderful delights and great soft pretzels! Try your luck and stop by, you may get pulled inside to taste a fresh sample if your timing is good. You can also see the menu on Facebook; just search the name Lighthouse Delicatessen. Since nothing is written in stone, we may change some things around or add some fun stuff but the idea is there. In addition to our menu look forward to in-house baked artisan breads, specialty meats and cheeses as well as a grab-and-go cooler filled with great treats, pre-weighed cheeses and snacks to-go. We will organically build a small retail section with some hard-to-find imported oils/vinegars along with crackers, pastas as well as an array of condiments and some fun pickled treats. We look forward to serving you, see ya then! Your Deli Crew

Final Note about the Far East Trip...
For the past 10 years, my father and I participate in what some would call a true test of our father-son relationship; others would just call it insanity. Every year, we play in a Father/Son Golf tournament on Long Island, it's the same tournament that my father used to play in with my grandfather, and my grandfather used to play with my Great-Grandfather.
This tournament is unique in that, the format is alternate shot.... meaning the sons Tee-Off on the first hole, and the father hits the next shot, then the son, until the ball goes into that itty-bitty hole. Then the fathers Tee-Off on the second and the process continues. That first tee-shot with everyone watching is something that haunts me all year long.
On the way to the way to the tournament, I turn to my father and say "I'm sorry" and then he turns to me and says, "I'm sorry". We are not the Woods family, so our game is sometimes a little inconsistent. Rather than spending the day saying sorry, our one rule is we're not allowed to say sorry to each other on the golf course.
This year, with my game not particularly strong (been kinda busy to play much...), rather than be silent after a not-so-good shot, I would turn to my father and say, "I love you". At the end of the day, we didn't break the course record but it was the best time we've ever had in that silly tournament. Even more important, we beat my Cousin Win and Uncle Bill to take back the family trophy.
What does this have to do with Liquor...? Nothing at all. Rather, it's just a reminder to let the people you love (especially your parents) know how you feel about them. Thanks Dad for everything and of course, I love you.
My Father and I on the 9th hole...
