Sam Adams - Imperial Series

samadamsimp

A wise beer drinker once said "Sam Adams: they make a lot of good beers but no great ones." I agreed until now. Recently we met their Hawaii rep and he was very excited about the new Imperial Series they launched this year, so in the interest of proving our theory wrong we ordered a few cases of the Imperial Stout, the Double Bock, and the Imperial White. The first thing we noticed was the alcohol content (it ranges from 9.2% to 10.3% but who's counting). So I went for the stout first - it being my favorite type of beer - and it was great! The dark color was like a moonless night, and the rich caramel head carried the aroma of a fresh cappuccino. The beer tasted of the darkest chocolate and finished with a hint if licorice: heavenly. The high alcohol acidity or "burn" was not there, to my surprise it was smooth to the end. I suggest letting this one sit in the glass for a minute; it really did open up. And it's a great deal at $9.95 a 4 pack.

Enjoy,
Chris

Charles Smith - Kung Fu Girl Riesling

kungfu

This wine drinker chose to review Charles Smith's Kung Fu Girl Riesling not just because Riesling was the first varietal she recalled falling in love with as she enjoyed lunches with her dad in college, or because the crisp black & white artwork of the label is just so cool-looking. She definitely didn't choose to try this wine just because she still harbors Kickbutt Girlpower Superhero fantasies from her childhood and the title called out to her. Even though she still wears Wonder Woman Underoos when no one's looking.

Okay. I confess. I chose to try one of Charles Smith's new releases exactly for those reasons. But the great news is that: I. Love. This. Wine. Not just because it's smooth & tasty and has tangerine, apricot and lime flavors. Or because Smith was Food & Wine's 2009 Winemaker of the Year. Not because it possesses a tiny effervescence, and makes me want to ditch everything and sit on my lanai with a book, a big Kentucky Derby hat and a view of Maui after a long sunny day. And definitely not because it costs less than $15.

Okay. For precisely all these reasons I chose to recommend that all white wine lovers try one of my new favorite wines. There. Kung Fu Girl kicks toosh!

Momokawa Organic Ginjo

ginko
I was surprised to learn this sake's kuna (brewery) is in Oregon as it's such a fine example of traditional Japanese sake.  Besides the clear body and lush fruit taste this Ginjo carries the Organic seal from the USDA and is one of the best organic bottles we carry.  With light tones of sweetness, this delicious sake leans toward a dryer taste and is best served chilled.  It's a great compliment to our local foods. I just had it with fresh Ono and string beans. Delicious!
Cheers,

Bearbo
at Pinot Noir
bearboat
This delightful Russian River Pinot Noir is another one of the specials gems in our collection. From the moment you see the bottle until the last drop in the glass, BearBoat Pinot Noir is a fine example of tasty Russian River Pinot Noirs. The sepia-colored picture of the two laughing bears on the front label pulls you in, and when you lift the bottle it feels like a heavy Burgundy bottle and that's always cool. However that's just the beginning...After pulling the cork and pouring it into the glass, the nose on this wine has a great bouquet of dark red fruit and smells so smooth, it's almost velvety. As you taste that velvet feel flows into your mouth like a dream followed with amazing flavors of raspberries, vanilla and nutmeg. As the wine opens up in the glass it is even more delicious!!
We drank it the other night with a vegan dish and the flavor did not get lost in the exotic flavors of the meal. Also...really tasty with Pizza. What blew me away the most was the price ($22.95) for this yummy Pinot Noir! It may even be one of the wines at the Blind Tasting!

Looking forward to sharing more wine with you all soon!
