National Convention is June 17 - 20, 2010

Greetings!

Have you made your reservation for NASBHC's annual convention in Arlington, VA?

It isn't too late!  In addition to receiving valuable training while meeting SBHC experts from across the country, you will experience the momentum of a national campaign at the Federal Advocacy Day in Washington D.C. on June 17.

If you plan to participate in Advocacy Day, please coordinate with Liz Smith Currie, our Policy Director.  We are stronger when we stand together!  Liz will make appointments for the Oregon delegation to meet with our federal legislators as a group.  Send Liz and email to let her know you will be there!  Liz@osbhcn.org

Scholarships are available!
NASBHC is offering sponsorships in return for assistance during the conference.  Read the details on our website - click here and scroll down.

These dollars, also supported by the EC Brown Foundation, are intended for smaller SBHCs in more rural and isolated regions that would like extra support in developing their resources, strategic planning, and in-state staff development training around the topic of youth sexual health and healthy student relationships.
Grant Funding for a Teen Advisory Council
Best Buy Community Grants Program
The Best Buy Community Grants Program provides support to nonprofit organizations that are located within 50 miles of a Best Buy store or distribution center.

Grants averaging $3,000 to $5,000 will promote programs and services that provide opportunities for young teens in the areas of education, life skills, leadership skills, and relationship development. Special consideration will be given to programs that serve a diverse population, build skills in early adolescents (primarily ages 13-18), show positive results against a demonstrated community need, and reach at-risk children in working families.

The grant application process will open on June 1 and close on July 1, 2010.

Please call on your network staff if you need guidance in how to qualify for this grant funding!

News From the Field

The Office of Family Health announces the availability of telephone
training on the Office on Women's Health online information system QuickHealthDataOnline.

The system contains data on demographics, mortality, reproductive
and maternal health, disease incidence, and access to care at the
county level for all states and territories.

Additionally, data are included on prevention, violence, and mental health at the state level.

To the extent possible, data are provided by race, ethnicity and gender, and where applicable/available, by age.  Also, the system incorporates graphing and mapping features so that the data of interest can be used directly as tables, graphs/chart and maps.

The training lasts one hour, and you can be sitting at your desk using your computer.  The dates/times available for the sessions are as follows:

Quick Health Data Online 101:
Fri, May 28, 8am to 9am, PST

Healthy Kids Update

A new exception to the two month period without insurance has been added!

Children in families who have chosen to take COBRA coverage after a job loss no longer need to wait two months after the COBRA coverage has ended to be eligible for Healthy Kids.  They are immediately eligible after the date their COBRA coverage ends.

Please have these children fill out and submit a Healthy Kids application.  We will work with the family and their COBRA insurance to prevent any lapse in coverage.

If you have any questions about these changes please contact Vivian Levy at vivian.levy@state.or.us or Danielle Sobel at danielle.sobel@state.or.us

You can also call with questions:  Vivian Levy (503)884-1427 or Danielle Sobel (503)884-1175.
