We work out too much
We work out too much. We waste time. A friend of mine runs marathons. He always talks about this "runner's high." But he has to go 26 miles for it. That's why I smoke and drink. I get the same feeling from a flight of stairs

Dear athlete,

After rain and heat, it's interesting to hear our fellow athletes complaining about the weather. Me (the guy who goes out the door most mornings at 5:35 a.m. with our small group who show up at my house) ... I'm always reminding myself that in 45 days or so, we'll be begging for warm mornings!

Here are my topics (not really random but items that captured my attention in the past 30 days):

  1. Step Up For Cancer  at Dicks Sporting Goods Park August 7th! (20 min from downtown).

For the past two years I've urged those of you that would like to do something for an amazing cause to show up and sign up or, better sign up and then show up! This is very much a family event and if you can go up and down steps, takes zero training (they give you plenty of time to finish and then feed you!). Go to the link to see where they're doing advance registration!

  2. Malcom Farley's latest artistic adventure August 21st in the Springs!

As some of you know, Malcolm Farley and I have been close friends for the past 14 or so years. His generosity and world class painting style are legendary. He did an incredible painting for the recent Polo Classic (a local runner who has successfully completed the Boston Marathon ...I won't name him...made the supported charity  very happy by winning it in a live auction) and now he'll be painting live in the Springs at the "Pedal Party" supporting the debut of the Pro Challenge! I encourage you to be there!

  3. Freedom Half Marathon's Colorado Relay Team needs a runner!

One of my responsibilities is to serve as the Race Director for the Inaugural Freedom Half Marathon & 5K on November 13th in Norfolk, VA. The event benefits the Wounded Warrior Project and several other veteran causes. The events are owned by Freedom Marathon, Inc. a 501 (c)3 and their team of 10 is short one runner! 6 of the team members are "Colorado locals" and 3 are sea level runners from Virginia. Entry fee is already paid. Interested? Email Manny Cordero  (caution, he's a hard charging Naval officer with tours in the Middle East!) and get in the game!

  4. Mizuno running Road to the Olympic Marathon Trials features Tyler McCandless
Wait 'til you meet Tyler! He represents all that is good in our emerging national athletes. In fact, he might be the poster child. Mizuno Running made a smart move pulling him into their fold. He's incredibly bright academically (check out his bio) and trains under Brad Hudson
up in Boulder, a coach of extraordinary talent. I went too long on the interview so it has an abrupt ending (my fault completely). I promise you'll like Tyler and will want to cheer him on as he makes his way to Houston for the Marathon Trials!

  5. David Manthey's Leadville 100   Adventure supported by Runner's Roost volunteers!

The other day I poked my head into Ed Riegert's Runner's Roost office (Ed is the Roost Marketing Director and also is a very accomplished athlete). He casually mentioned that he and some other Roost volunteers were going to help pace our buddy, David Manthey at Leadville! David was amazingly helpful with his band of Runners Edge of the Rockies' pacers at the recent Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon  (May 20, 2012 by the way!) and now he's tackling the daunting Leadville Trail 100. He's battled back from injuries and we wish him incredible success!!

Here's a quick "shout out" to my friend Chris Laskey and his business partner, Matt Miller for the successful debut of the Denver Triathlon! BKB is not involved in a biz way with the event but I really admire trailblazers like them for digging in and producing a fun event!

My running dog, Wesley makes this page from time to time (he's absolutely A-OK by the way and enjoyed fooling around with Peter Tanui at the VPI K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walk  last month!) and he's always on the lookout for dog-friendly events. Two more have popped up in late August. The K9 Cancer Walk  at Denver's City Park is on August 21st and is followed by the Woof and Wag the next weekend at Aspen Grove in Littleton. Who can say no to Wesley?

Saw a few of you around the country at events like the huge Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, the Danskin Triathlon in Massachusetts (en route saw an old friend Charley Perez and his lovely wife at Dulles heading for a cycling vacation in upstate NY) and the Deseret News Marathon in Salt Lake. It's really fun to see friendly faces when I'm away from Colorado. Next stops take me to venues coast to coast over the next 5 weekends (Creigh's calendar) and if you're there please say hi!

Enjoy this weather. I will predict you will reflect fondly upon it in two months!

See you on the trails,

Creigh Kelley

Ciclovia!!!
CiclovƒaIncluViva Streets is a one-day celebration that's made possible when a major Denver street is returned to the people. On August 14, LiveWell Colorado and BikeDenver will transform 23rd Avenue between City Park and Stapleton into a car-free parkway for all Denverites to enjoy. The streets will be closed to cars and will come alive with walkers, bikers, runners, strollers, hoola-hoopers, dancers, paraders, musicians, healthy food purveyors and anyone wanting to play in the streets for the day. It's a tribute to the power of our city's streets--to get people moving, to bring neighbors together, and to strengthen Colorado's healthy, active culture.
