Dear Athlete!
What an amazing extended weekend July 4th provides!
For me, it's my annual trip to Atlanta for the AJC Peachtree Road Race (one of the first races I ran after college and now I am privileged to emcee and announce it!).
Those of you staying in Colorado, you have a wide variety of run/walks to choose from. The rule of thumb is to pick the one within 5 miles of your home, but let me focus on two that have everything you might want and more (they are the best "Liberty" events in the metro area:
Liberty Run 4 Mile Run/ Walk at Denver's Washington Park (American Cancer Society)
Liberty Dash 5K Run/ Walk at Lone Tree's Sweetwater Park (City of Lone Tree)
BOTH have a great shirt (thanks to BornFit) and both have a kid's fun run!
You could run at Washington Park or at Sweetwater Park (our 5:30am running group just did a long run through the park and on part of the course and it's beautiful!!), relax and then hit Lone Tree for all the rest of July 4th starting at 3pm including fireworks at 9pm!
Now to my favorite topics for the month!
Mizuno's Road to the Olympic Trials! Each month we're featuring an athlete who's qualified for the Olympic Trials (marathon in Houston, January 2012). The ahtlete featured this month is a young woman, Kristen Fryburg Zaitz ("Zites") in Broomfield, Colorado. We caught up with her at Runner's Roost in Denver. Click and watch!

Had a chance to get away and be with Barb and Jeff Galloway at their retreat in Vail a couple of weeks ago (BTW, Jeff has written a brand new book for young cross country runners, Cross Country Running. It's a perfect gift for your high school athlete getting ready for the fall or their coach!). Had some beautiful runs while there AND happened to turn on the local TV channel and caught an interview with Eugene Buchanan, author of Outdoor Parents, Outdoor Kids. He's a Colorado guy with a passion for getting our kids (and us!) outside. If you're not a parent, exercise your option to get a copy for a parent. They'll thank you many times over!
Some of you know my undergrad degree at VMI was English (ignore my dangling participles and nonsequiters, please!). The book I just finished (lent to me by my good friend Mindy Dunbar...now her husband John is on notice he'll have to read it!) is a MUST read, Unbroken. It's a true story, well-written, gripping and definitely has a running theme. With July 4th in front of us, I cannot suggest a better way to remind ourselves of how fortunate we are than by reading this book.
One final note: my incredible dog Wesley (all gentle, muscled 100 pounds of him!) recommends 2 events coming up, the VPI K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walk at Washington Park on July 10th and the K9 Cancer Walk on August 21st at Denver's City Park. We did have to buy him another hands free leash...he wore out another one from SitStay.com!
Have a safe and wonderful 4th! If you happen to be at Peachtree with the other 60,000+ runners, please say, "hi!" |
