Dear athlete!
You are impressing me in so many ways as a collective fitness community! It's providing me with "bragging rights" wherever I travel...we're part of the "most fit" state in the nation and several of our cities rank in the top 10 best! Maybe the Colorado Tourism Office should create a luggage tag we can purchase that reflects that stat? Imagine how many glances you'll get standing in hotel lobbies, at baggage carousels or placing your bag in the overhead?
On to this month's topics:
- A smiling Dad's request (me!) in behalf of his daughter, Page Kelley! If you ski, believe in the power of bright, young leaders, care about the Colorado Breast Cancer Coalition and truly want to make a significant difference in a fun, fun way, then PLEASE look at this web site! Ski Bumps Fight Lumps . Starting on March 13th they're going to try and ski all 27 ski areas in 8 days and raise national awareness AND tons of money!
- That Dam Run Half Marathon& 5K is this Sunday! Need a long training run in preparation for a marathon or would like to prove to yourself you can do 13.1 miles, then here's a perfect chance! Sunday morning at 10AM with decent weather predicted (at least right now it is!).
- Runnin' of the Green Lucky 7K, March 13th! Late registration and timing chip pick-up is ALWAYS wild because so many 1st timers show up. Be one of the smart ones that sign up early and then pick up your t-shirt, timing chip and race number at Runners Roost on S. Colorado Blvd and Mexico on Friday March 11th (3PM - 7PM) or Saturday, March 12th (10AM - 4PM). Trust me...don't wait until race morning!!
- Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon Weekend, May 13-15!! If you haven't visited the web site yet, please do it. The event web site has already been acclaimed as the "Best Urban Tour" photo journey in the country! Tour the course (half and full marathon) and the new "legs" of the marathon relay! If supporting a charity is exciting to you, there are over 60 Charity Partners signed up (top 5 number of Charity Partners in the US!). Browse the list and pick one to support!
- Jeff Galloway's RunWalkRun Interval Timer! I promised Jeff I'd tell people how to get this and usually there's a link on his site. If it's sold out, write him and he'll make sure you get one (or track down MikeCostas mwcostas@msn.com of the local Galloway Running Group!
- Wonderful tribute and story on line at Runner's World by David
Willey about the loss of his dog: This really touched me and if you're a "dog person", particularly if you run or walk with your dog, take a moment and read this. You will not be disappointed.
Speaking of pets, here's my latest "pet peeve"!
I just have to mention that I'm noticing a curious trend on the roads and trails: people are not responding to friendly waves and "hello's". Last weekend I must've passed in both directions over 100 runners and walkers and truthfully, only about 5% bothered to wave or say something in return.
It begs the question: Are so many people wearing things in their ears that they are oblivious or is that friendly courtesy simply fading? Not a big deal in the scheme of worldly topics but it got my attention!
Have fun out there and enjoy this great weather!

Runnin' of the Green - March 13, 2011
It's time once again to start training for the Runnin' of the Green! The worlds largest 7k, affectionally nicknamed the Irish Marathon.
The 23rd annual Runnin' of the Green will be held on March 13th at 10: 15 am in Lower Downtown Denver - LODO. The "Lucky 7k" course winds its way from McCormick's Fish House & Bar (at 17th and Wazee) through the streets of LODO, Highlands, and Platte Valley, finishing back in LODO at huge block party! There, you will enjoy LIVE Irish folk music, step dancers, bagpipers, food and Killian's beer.
Important Information - For your safety and enjoyment, the Runnin' of the Green will be using a corral system with a rolling start. The first corral will start at 10:15 am. Please note these important instructions:
- Corral One - will be for those that plan to run at a pace of 8:30/mile or faster. Get there early to ensure you can get into the corral. Once it hits capacity, no one will be permitted into this corral.
- Corral Two - will be for all runners in the 7K (excluding those with dogs and strollers).
- Corral Three - will be for those running with dogs and strollers and walkers in the 7K (please note no dogs and no strollers will be permitted in the first two corrals - this is for safety reasons and we encourage you, based on the size of the event, to not bring your dogs or strollers).
- Corral Four - this will be for the Leprechaun Leap 2 Mile Run/Walk. This is a non-timed event!
Packet Pick-Up - We strongly encourage you to come by Runners Roost in Denver (Colorado Blvd and Mexico) on Friday, March 11 or Saturday, March 12 for packet pick up. With an average of 6000 participants, you can avoid the race day rush and get your packet early. For those that pre-register prior to March 9th, you can also pick up your t-shirt! Hours for packet pick-up are as follows:
- March 11: 3 pm - 7 pm

3,063 Miles! 52 Days! 57 Years Old!
People drive across the United States all the time, touring the 3,000-plus miles for vacation, relocation, or rite of passage. Every now and then, someone makes the trip on foot, taking a year or more to walk across the great expanse of our country.
Marshall Ulrich ran from San Francisco to New York City in 52.5 days. He was 57 years old and making an attempt to break a world record set by a man half his age.
Completing the mind-bending and body-breaking equivalent of 117 back-to-back marathons, he ran an average of more than 400 miles a week, gained 84,430 feet in elevation, dealt with temps ranging from below freezing to the upper 90s, and crossed 12 states.
Ulrich is a versatile, world-class extreme endurance athlete, not only a legendary ultra-runner but also Seven Summits mountaineer and adventure racer. So although his new book, "Running on Empty," is a memoir mostly about the transcontinental run, it also includes tales and lessons learned from all his athletic pursuits, some painful, some funny, some completelylife-changing.
Now, Marshall has given us the inside scoop for you on how to order your copy today. You can also get some valuable "give-aways" we know you'll love (click here).
