Run Fun Corner

In honor of the upcoming New York Marathon, some fun from Meb on Late Night with David Letterman from last year's win.

Quick Links...

Dear athlete!

With the mid-term elections behind us (or at least most of them!), let's keep enjoying the amazing weather! It makes it much easier to go out the door and get in a few miles without grabbing too many layers.

This past month had me going all over the country (saw several of you at events where I announced and that's always a bonus to see a friend from home!). While at the Des Moines Marathon, I was happily surprised to be rooming with long-time friend Jeff Galloway (yes, just like college...you occasionally get assigned to share a room at events!). Jeff has legions following him as the popularity of his run-walk program grows. Mike Costas, of Colorado's Galloway Group can tell you about this program and it's a wonderful "first step" to getting ready for a half or full marathon.

Here are a couple of updates in the marathon world:

  1. Just left the Colfax Marathon office.  They have sold out their "First 500 Runners" promotion.  However, they agreed to open it back up until midnight Thursday (the 4th) for you BKB E:Newsletter readers  - so sign up right now!  Other great Colfax news - we've designed new half and marathon courses with more shade and scenery and will be announcing them before the holidays (still starting and finishing in City Park). David Manthey has agreed to have Runner's Edge of the Rockies  sign on as the "Official" Training Program and will do Pace Team Leaders for both the Half and the Full! Very cool!
  2.  Our great friend and runner James Mejia (now officially running for Mayor of Denver!) finished his 49th and 50th marathon in almost back-to-back fashion last month by doing the Chicago Marathon in 4:19 and then the Rock 'N Roll Marathon in 4:16! If this tells me nothing else about him, he's consistent, has an amazing work ethic and is reliable! Although I'm not a Denver resident, I hope you'll give him a good look and support him. He's a great family guy, loves the city and is a true advocate for the health and wellness of our metropolitan area. OK, I've embarrassed him so he can take it out on me in a future workout!

This month a great event you should really consider particiapting in is the Children's Hospital Race for Fetal Hope on the 14th.  I am honored to be on the board and last year the event was voted as the #1 5K in Colorado.  This year it is even bigger and better with a new course and truly it is a fun family event with a large family expo as well.

Sometimes I write about Sally Edwards, one of the most talented spokespeople for the sport of triathlon. Renee and I had dinner with her a few weeks ago in Austin at a Trek Women's Triathlon  (I announce the series and she's the national spokesperson) and she mentioned a new "app" she created for your iPhone or iPod, the Upbeat Workouts! It's fun and easy...check it out!

As I head out to Arizona for a fun weekend announcing at the Women's Half Marathon & 5K, I'm reminded how much our sport has grown and matured. Some of you know that the national HQ for Running USA, the non-profit that advances the growth and success of the running industry in America by promoting and building the sport and providing quality services that enhance members' businesses is located in Colorado! It is offering a super deal for events that are not yet members until the end of the year: the $100 recession buster membership from November 1 until December 31, 2010! This should be appealing to an emerging event since it's greater than 50% discount! Interested? Call 719-573-4133 or email Nancy Hobbs (she's in the Springs and you might also know her as the Trails, Mountain and Ultra national leader!) and you might want to sign up and attend the February National Conference in San Antonio!

That's it for this month and for those of you wondering, our little 5:35AM training group has grown to 7 counting my dog Wesley! Coldest morning so far was 33 degrees and it's STILL fun!

Sincerely,

Creigh Kelley
