Do your part to ensure you are timed/scored correctly

If you want to be timed/scored correclty at your next run/walk, be sure to do your part.  Here are some simple things you can and should do to ensure:

- write legibly on race forms (if the event can't read it, then you may miss out on that age group award.

-always be sure to include your age & gender (without it, they won't know how to score you in age results.

-Always wear your bib on the front and on the outermost layer of clothing you will be running/walking in (many timing companies will do manual checks and if they cannot see your bib you will be missed.  Also with the new technologies of tags being in the bibs, your bibs need to be on front and "seen" by the timing systems to read your bib/tag.

-Always review on site the preliminary postings.  If something is not correct, you will have the opportunity to fix it before it is final.

-be sure you understand how to wear the tag/chip provided at the event.  Listen for instructions.  Remember most tags go on your shoe or ankle and the new bibtag systems, the tags are on your bibs.  They certainly do not go in your pockets, coates, purse, jogging storller, etc.  Yes they should not be pinned to the back of your shirt either (yes someone did this).

-Remember that there can be errors and they  most of the time can be easily corrected.  Be polit in notifying the timing crew of an issue either during or after the event.  If they are any good, they will respond and solve the issue in a timely manner (no pun intended.. well maybe just a bit).

Quick Links...

Dear athlete!

October? Is it possible? Have you started digging in your dresser drawers trying to locate tights, gloves, hats and all those extras that complete our winter running/ walking wardrobe? Begrudgingly, I have, too. The best part of our sport is that it doesn't come to a grinding seasonal halt!

Those of you that are doing your make-up for the
Boulder Marathon this weekend, best of luck! No one wants to see an event cancelled and Jeff Mason and the City of Boulder put together a reasonable solution.

This weekend is also the debut of the
Bear Chase at Bear Creek State Park! David Manthey and Runner's Edge (they have about 80 of their runners volunteering to make it fun!) have an event for everyone from really short to 50 miles, a distance that stuns me still!

Not to push you out of state, there were two really fun events this past weekend (September 25-26) that I do recommend: the Road
Runner Akron Marathon and the Quad Cities Marathon. Both have the array of half marathons, 5K's and relays. What I was really impressed with were the friendly communities! I had the chance to run with an old friend, Amby Burfoot of Runner's World the day before Akron and it was refreshing to know that he's loving the sport and still bringing that energy into his writing and editing at the magazine. Decades ago we competed against each other in high school in Connecticut. He went on to win Boston in '68 and later ran 2:14 in the marathon (I didn't and he was very gracious about that :0) ).

Coming up on the 9th of October will be the
Kids Running America event at Elitch Gardens. These children's events are so important to act as a catalyst for the kids to appreciate the "fun of fitness". If only the adults that are not staying fit, especially their parents and teachers, would get into the game, the kids wouldn't need a catalyst...they'll have proof in their lives every day.

Elitch Gardens is hosting the Melting PotHalloween Hustle 5K and Kid's event on Sunday morning, October 31st! You can get a ticket to Elitch Gardens that day, terrific refreshments AND a great tech shirt! It's a super deal and you can return to the park later in the day or evening to use the ticket!

99% of you know that it's not cool to run or walk in an organized race or club event without paying. Lately I've noticed participants at training groups and races jumping in and not paying. If you see that happening, remind them (gently) that it's no different than sneaking into a movie theatre or a baseball game and not paying. Charities, clubs and training groups that people pay to be a member of are being chipped away at. It's simply bad behavior. So ends my lecture :)!

The 2011
Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon will have a booth at the sold-out Rock 'N Roll Denver Marathon October 15-16 and will be giving away lots of things at the booth, plus the web site will go live for entries that weekend! Also, please visit (if you're age eligible!) the post event Beer Garden on Sunday, October 17th after you finish. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and that's worth the visit!

Finally, I want to thank all of you that asked about my training after I lost almost 4 weeks due to pneumonia. It's going better every day and my training group is better than ever!

See you on the roads and trails!

Sincerely,

Creigh Kelley

Kids Running America
at Elitch Gardens - October 9
KRAKids Running America (KRA) is an incremental marathon program designed to help Colorado school aged kids start running for a healthier future. While running, either individually or on a team through a school or organization, the kids complete 25.2 miles incrementally over a given time period. Then they run the final mile, of the marathon distance, together with all of the other children in the program at our Final Mile Event.

This fall KRA's Final Mile Event is at Elitch Gardens on October 9th.  Modeled after the Disney Marathon the course runs through the grounds of Elitch Gardens, with a Finisher Celebration Party at the finish line! Kids Running America has partnered up with CROC's to help encourage Colorado Kids to get and stay healthy. The team that has the most participants completing this fall's program will each be given a pair of CROC's. KRA believes that physical education is very important to today's youth. So, in that spirit, KRA is giving the Colorado school with the most runners $500 towards their P.E. department. Registration is open at www.kidsrunningamerica.org or call 303 917 1002 for more information.   It is easy to bring KRA to your school!

Bike Hero of the Month
bk10BikeDenver's Bike Hero of the Month Awardshighlight different people each month, and help encourage other people to bike by telling the Hero's personal story. The goal of the Bike Hero Awards Program is to showcase the diversity of citizen-cyclists and the people who support them in Denver.

BikeDenver's Executive Director Piep van Heuven says: "We introduced the Bike Hero awards because we want to encourage a friendly environment for and public image of bicyclists in Denver. One of the ways we can do this is to showcase the different faces of and great stories about people in our community who ride bikes or help others get out there and ride. Through the Bike Hero awards, BikeDenver honors bicyclists of all ages and walks of life, from the first time bicyclist to the rain or shine bicyclist!

To nominate a Bike Hero, please send a photo and a brief description of why you think they should be recognized (100 words or less) to info(at)bikedenver.org.
