My oldest daughter, Becca has been encouraging me to have a "Creigh's Consumer Corner" that would highlight services or merchants. I like the idea (these are NOT paid endorsements...just subjective recommendations) so here are two that I want to share.
SyncHand'sFree communicating while driving: I'm sure there are other ways to do this but this is my favorite. It's in my car and when I rent, I request it. Simple, safe and logical.
Clear Card: Those of us that had one, appreciated the zip through airline security. When it collapsed a couple of years ago, we wondered if it would resurface. Well, it has and Denver is a launch point for this fall. Grab your old Clear Card (they'll honor it!) or get a new one. You'll be happy you did! |

Dear Athlete! Ever wake up in a hotel room and have to look at your Blackberry to figure out where you are? Many of you endure incredible schedules that propel you from one meeting to the next, one plane to the next and the only touchstone you have is anticipation of the next workout! Looking at the recent stats in the Running USA National Runner Survey (a survey members can purchase each year for less than $60!) the "average' runner is around 41, 75% has a household income of over $75K, 53% female, runs 10-12 months a year and over 70% do it to stay in shape and stay healthy. These are very uncomplicated stats and I'm betting they apply to most of you. It is not difficult to understand why Bolder Boulder, Colfax, Cherry Creek Sneak and Rock 'N Roll events are healthy and growing at significant rates. You are the perfect customer and did I mention that most of you do it because you believe it's fun?! Speaking of fun, I had fun last weekend announcing the Rock 'N Roll Half Chicago (25,000+) and watched my daughter, Page get her first half finisher medal! It seems like just yesterday that she was scrambling up on announcer platforms at local Denver events to get some "air" time as an 8 year old! Our good friend and amazing athlete Alan Culpepper has taken on operations for the Denver Rock 'N Roll Marathon this fall and his Solepepper Sports store is now a Runners Roost in Louisville! I asked Alan about the move to San Diego and he reminds us that he will be back here often. This sounds like the best of both worlds for he and his family. We wish him well! This weekend has one of the most fun events on the schedule, the 2nd Annual Step Up for Cancer at Dick's Sporting Goods Park (15 minutes from downtown Denver!). Sign up is going really well and it has a wonderful and important charity component. One of the charity's that is involved is the Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance. You may have participated in their debut "Race For Awareness" at the beginning of June where over 1700 people showed up. We honored my friend Jodi Brammeier, the founder of the event and 7's Bertha Lynn interviewed Jodi and the event was tagged "Jodi's Race". Jodi gamely sat in her wheelchair and applauded everyone. Ovarian cancer had returned with a vengeance. We lost Jodi on Tuesday afternoon but we did not lose her spirit and sense of commitment. You can memorialize her by participating on Sunday at Dick's. Here's the link. There are publications out there in our running world that you might not see. One is Marathon & Beyond. It speaks to those of you thinking or doing marathons and perhaps the more intrepid (you can insert whatever descriptive you choose!) who go beyond 26 miles in races! It's a quarterly and the articles are more in-depth. I like it. As some of you know I serve happily as the Race Director for the Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon in May. We have some exciting announcements about it coming by the end of this month! I also serve as the Race Director of the Inaugural Norfolk Freedom Half Marathon next year. If you've been yearning for a fast course in a beautiful and historic setting, this is your choice! I'll keep you up to date as we move forward toward that starting line! BKB has teamed up with Hallucination Sports to produce a completely revitalized and fun (my new theme in running!!) Halloween Hustle at Elitch Gardens in downtown Denver on Halloween, October 31st! Every entrant will get a tech t-shirt PLUS a ticket to Elitch Gardens for use on that day. Kid's can enjoy the Family activities during the day (BooVille and Trick and Treat Trail) and when the sun goes down, the adults get Fright By Night! Forms and online regisration will be everywhere in the next two weeks so check in with your favorite running store and check online at www.halloweenhustle.org to get the info. We may have to impose a limit on the size of the event if registration goes crazy and I'll make sure to email you if that starts to happen. Next weekend Panera Bread will be helping Care and Share to raise needed monies to help the greater Colorado Springs community with the Panerathon 5 & 10K. Please join us for this important event!
Enjoy the month...I can almost hear the cooler weather coming so don't lament the heat...embrace it! |

14th Annual Race for Research - August 22
Cancer League of Colorado will present the 14th Annual Race for Research 5K run/walk on Sunday, August 22, 2010 in Washington Park. The Race for Research is a timed 5k as well as a family fun run in memory of Michele Plachy-Rubin. Michele was a young wife, mother and kindergarten teacher in the Denver Public Schools when she was diagnosed with brain cancer in December of 1996. The Race for Research was conceived by Michele's friends to raise money to fund local cancer research. Tragically, Michele lost her fight with cancer in May of 1998 but The Race for Research continues as an opportunity for men, women and children to help fight cancer in Michele's memory. All proceeds from the Race for Research are donated to the Cancer League of Colorado, a 501c3 non profit organization, with no paid staff.
We will have entertainment from the band, Look Both Ways and a free pancake breakfast following the race, compliments of Bone Fish Grill. Please help us find a cure for cancer in Michele's memory by participating in the Race for Research!

Kids Running America
at Elitch Gardens - October 9
Kids Running America (KRA) is an incremental marathon program designed to help Colorado school aged kids start running for a healthier future. While running, either individually or on a team through a school or organization, the kids complete 25.2 miles incrementally over a given time period. Then they run the final mile, of the marathon distance, together with all of the other children in the program at our Final Mile Event.
This fall KRA's Final Mile Event is at Elitch Gardens on October 9th. Modeled after the Disney Marathon the course runs through the grounds of Elitch Gardens, with a Finisher Celebration Party at the finish line! Kids Running America has partnered up with CROC's to help encourage Colorado Kids to get and stay healthy. The team that has the most participants completing this fall's program will each be given a pair of CROC's. KRA believes that physical education is very important to today's youth. So, in that spirit, KRA is giving the Colorado school with the most runners $500 towards their P.E. department. Registration is open at www.kidsrunningamerica.org or call 303 917 1002 for more information. It is easy to bring KRA to your school! |
