OUR ANNUAL GALA AND AUCTION TO BENEFIT
CAMP I CAN AND OUR AQUATIC PROGRAMS
SATURDAY, MAY 7, 2011
The Autism Society' San Diego's 11th annual, $100,000 "All Out For Autism" fundraiser gala will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2011, 6-11 p.m., at the Del Mar Racetrack Mission Tower, with VIP red carpet festivities beginning in the Plaza de Mexico. The theme of next year's event will be centered around old Classic Hollywood. Ladies can enter the "Win-Lose-Show" favorite hat contest and enjoy the live and silent auction and raffle, live big band music, swing dance show, comfort food stations thru the eras, and many more details to come! All proceeds benefit Camp I CAN (Camp Including Children with Autism Now), and aquatic programs and services for children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders. iCAN COMMUNICATE SEMINAR SERIES CONTINUES WITH PARENT, ADVOCATE, AND AUTHOR, SHANNON DES ROCHES ROSA ON MAY 15TH
The Autism Society of San Diego is honored to present the next workshop in our "iCan Communicate" series. Our presenter will be Shannon Des Roches Rosa who will give a parent expert perspective on her son Leo's iPad story. Des Roches Rosa will also discuss whether the iPad is the right fit for your child; a survey of helpful applications; and resources for getting, fundraising for, and justifying a school district or insurance iPad purchase.
Space is EXTREMELY limited and first priority will be giving to parents or caregivers of an individual with autism.
Janine Boleda of Good Karma Apps, and a board member of the Autism Society of San Diego, will also be available after the workshop to answer any parent questions or aid in "hands-on" questions relating to the iPad or iTouch. Please feel free to bring your iTouch or iPad so you can check out the features as we talk!

At the heart of the Autism Socity of San Diego lies our board of directors, a passionate group of parents, professionals, and community members who lay the framework for our programs and outreach.
Board members attend monthly meetings and sit on committiees, which help to guide and organize functions of the Autism Society of San Diego, such as camp, aquatic programs, scholoarships, fundraisers, and support groups.
if you are interested in joining the board you must attend our next board of directors meeting, on May 26, 2011, at the United Way/CHAD Bldg, located at 4699 Murphy Canyon Rd in San Diego. The meeting is schedule to begin at 6:30 p.m.
The election for new board members takes place in June 21, 2011, with the new board starting July 1, 2011.

SPACE AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE FOR CAMP I CAN
Registration for the 2011 season of Camp ICAN (Camp Including Children with Autism Now), the only camp of its kind in the county specifically designed for kids and teens on the autism spectrum, is underway. There are still plenty of spaces left at both locations: Toby Wells YMCA in Kearny Mesa and The Palomar Family YMCA in Escondido.

SPLASH FOR CASH
OUR ANNUAL FUNDRAISER FOR SURF CAMP AND AQUATIC PROGRAMS Splash for Cash, our annual swim-a-thon fundraiser for Autism Society of San Diego Surf Camp and other aquatic programs is coming! This year's event is scheduled for June 5, 2011 and will once again take place at Aqua Pros Swim School at the Boys and Girls Club in Clairemont.
This one of a kind fundraiser is open to all swimmers, from recreational to competitive and for those who enjoy splashing around in the pool. This is not a race and you do not need to swim or be present all day. Come and enjoy a fun event at the pool! Recruit your friends, family, co-workers and teammates to help raise funds.
Besides all the fun & excitement there are, "Swimmer in the Pool" prizes as well as a delicious breakfast & lunch prepared & served by San Diego Firefighters!
The money raised from Splash for Cash wil determine how many spaces will be available for Surf Camp this year. If your child has enjoyed Surf Camp in previous years and/or would like to attend this summer, please show your support by participating in this great event!

ANNOUNCING MAX'S THIRD ANNUAL 4S RANCH AUTISM WALK
SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2011
Max Utter is the loving 16-year-old brother to Sam Utter, a child on the Autism Spectrum. Max has organized an annual charity event to help Sam and others with Autism, Max's Third Annual 4S Ranch Walk for Autism
in Rancho Bernardo. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, May 14th at 11:00AM at the 4S Ranch Community Park, at the corner of 4S Ranch Parkway and Dove Creek Road, in Rancho Bernardo.
All proceeds from the walk will be used to help children with autism attend The Autism Society of America's Camp I Can. The Autism
Society of America is the largest charity supporting children with autism in the United States. Camp I Can is a summer
camp designed specifically for children with autism to give them an opportunity to learn, grow, and enjoy a summer camp
experience like their typical peers. Max's goal this year is to raise more than $3,000.

Admission: $6 AMC Entertainment (AMC) and the Autism Society have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment on a monthly basis with the Sensory Friendly Films program. In order to provide a more accepting and comfortable setting for this unique audience, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought up and the sound turned down, families will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing - in other words, AMC's "Silence is Golden�" policy will not be enforced unless the safety of the audience is questioned. |
Family Gym Nights in North County
Join other families of individuals with autism at a Family Fun Gymnastic Night in north county. Our north county Camp I CAN partner, the Palomar Family YMCA, will provide the gymnasium equipment and bounce house, and together we will provide the fun! Bring the entire family for an enjoyable, relaxing night of family recreation. We will have food from El Pollo Loco and drinks, but feel free to bring an item to share potluck style.

Aspies and Friends, A Social Group for Adults on the Spectrum, Hosts Night at the Ballpark on May 21
This support/social group provides a casual, safe environment where young adults can form lifelong frienships and network with one another. Every event will revolve around a fun, low cost activity that will bring the group together while working on the formation of new and existing social skills.
May's meet up will be at Petco Field for the Padres vs. Mariners game on May 21 at 6:00 pm. Tickets are available for $8.50 on the Padres website. Click here for tickets. Support Group for Families & Friends of Adults on the Autism Spectrum
Come join us on May 10, 2011 to support families of adults, both young and old, with ASD. Share and learn together the challenges and victories as they evolve and transition through life. This group will be led by our chapter president, Shirley Fett, a mother of two young men with autism. We will be meeting the 2nd Tuesday of each month

MONTHLY AUTISM SUPPORT GROUP: Autism Through The Lifespan
Please join other parents, caregivers and professionals at this monthly information and support group meeting near downtown San Diego. A joint collaboration between the Autism Society of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District, this information and support group discusses Autism Through the Lifespan. Each month focuses on a different age and stage of development.
Each meeting features an expert speaker, an ASA parent mentor and the opportunity to ask questions and network. These meetings are free and open to all. May's Meeting Topic:
