THE AUTISM SOCIETY OF SAN DIEGO HONORS BELOVED AUTISM EDUCATOR, SIRI MARTIN ANDREWS, AT THE CHAD HEALTH HERO AWARDS

Combined Health Agencies (CHAD) of San Diego will present its annual Hero Health Hero Awards for 2011 on March 16 at The Prado Ballroom in Balboa Park from 7:30-9:30 a.m.  The heroes being recognized with these awards have given freely of their time, talent, and resources to improve the health and well-being of the people of San Diego County.  The Autism Society of San Diego has nominated the late, Siri Martin Andrews, as its Health Hero of 2011.  Ms. Andrews, Ph.D, BCBA-D, who recently passed away at the age of 34, after a long battle with cancer, touched the lives of so many through her tireless and dedicated work on behalf of individuals with autism.

SEEKING SPONSORS AND AUCTION DONATIONS FOR ALL OUT FOR AUTISM, OUR ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA TO BENEFIT CAMP ICAN AND OTHER RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS

The Autism Society' San Diego's  11th annual, $100,000 "All Out For Autism" fundraiser gala will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2011, 6-11 p.m., at the Del Mar Racetrack Mission Tower, with VIP red carpet festivities beginning in the Plaza de Mexico.  The theme of next year's event will be centered around old Classic Hollywood.  Ladies can enter the "Win-Lose-Show" favorite hat contest and enjoy the live and silent auction and raffle, live big band music, swing dance show, comfort food stations thru the eras, and many more details to come!  All proceeds benefit Camp I CAN (Camp Including Children with Autism Now), and aquatic programs and services for children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

CENTRAL AND NORTH COUNTY MONTHLY SUPPORT GROUPS WILL SOON BE MEETING QUARTERLY

We are excited to see so much interest in both our daytime, Autism though the Lifespan collaborative support group, and our new evening group, Families & Friends of Adults on the Spectrum, both meeting in central San Diego. With this in mind and in keeping with our mission of using our resources as wisely as possible and serving as many families as we can, we will be making some changes in our North County and Central San Diego Information and Support Group meetings starting this spring.
  
Both San Diego Central and North County Evening Info and Support Group meeting will be held quarterly with occasional shared meeting for larger events. High interest topics and events like Teacher and Caregiver Appreciation, Sibling Panels, Recreational and Community Resources and How to Obtain Quality Services will continue to be a focus of these meetings with an emphasis on all ages across the spectrum.
  
Please watch for an announcement coming soon for our upcoming shared event recognising Teachers, Caregivers and Businesses who have gone that extra mile for a loved one with autism.

  • An "easy atmosphere" where noise and unusual behavior are understood

CAMP I CAN REGISTRATION OPENS MARCH 21, 2011

We are gearing up for the 2011 season of Camp ICAN (Camp Including Children with Autism Now), the only camp of its kind in the county specifically designed for kids and teens on the autism spectrum.

 

Registration forms will be available at the Autism Society of San Diego website starting on March 10. Please visit: www.sd-autism.org for camp schedules, additional camp information and to download this year's registration form. Registration will open on March 21, 2011.

AMC Entertainment (AMC) and the Autism Society have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity to enjoy their favorite films in a safe and accepting environment on a monthly basis with the "Sensory Friendly Films" program.

In order to provide a more accepting and comfortable setting for this unique audience, the movie auditoriums will have their lights brought up and the sound turned down, families will be able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing - in other words, AMC's "Silence is Golden®" policy will not be enforced unless the safety of the audience is questioned.

Involved Exceptional Parents Day (IEP Day) is a unique one-day conference for parents of children with special needs and the professionals who work with them. For the best interest of these special children, nearly 300 parents and professionals come together each year, to learn in a collaborative effort.

This year's conference, our 28th, will be on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley. The theme will be: Resources for Family Success.

ASPIES & FRIENDS: AN ACTIVIY/SOCIAL GROUP FOR ADULTS ON THE SPECTRUM
Autistic AdultsThis support/social group provides a casual, safe, family-like environment where young adults can form lifelong friendships and network with one another. Every event will revolve around a fun, low cost activity that will bring the group together while working on the formation of new and existing social skills.There are no events scheduled for March. The next event is an outing to the Renaissance Faire at Felicita Park on April  2, 2011 . NORTH COUNTY FAMILY GYM NIGHT

 Join other families with autistic children at a Family Fun Gymnastic Night in north county. Our north county Camp I CAN partner, the Palomar Family YMCA, will provide the gymnasium equipment and bounce house, and together we will provide the fun! Bring the entire family for an enjoyable, relaxing night of family recreation. We will have food from El Pollo Loco and drinks, but feel free to bring an item to share potluck style.

MONTHLY AUTISM SUPPORT GROUP: AUTISM THROUGH THE LIFESPAN
Raised puzzlepiecePlease join other parents, caregivers and professionals at this monthly information and support group meeting near downtown San Diego.  A joint collaboration between the Autism Society of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District, this information and support group discusses Autism Through the Lifespan.  Each month focuses on a different age and stage of development.

 

Each meeting features an expert speaker, an ASA parent mentor and the opportunity to ask questions and network.  These meetings are free and open to all.
