Building Renovation & Remodel Progress

Since groundbreaking for St. Francis Manor building project just before Christmas, Bushong Construction and Wells + Associates have been hard at work.

In January, crews broke through the wall in the social center to combine a newly built room and the old assisted living dining room. Work is now underway making the new kitchen that can provide for both meals for residents and special events in the social center with ease. This will also allow all residents to eat together in one dining room.

In February and March, work continued on the exterior walls of the new addition and foundations were dug for the new administration offices and boardrooms, see picture below.

  Progress2
In April, the social center renovation began with lighting fixtures being taken down and early stages of new acoustical ceiling tile laid out.

If you would like a personal tour of building progress, we would love to have you. Please call Rebecca at St. Francis Manor and arrange a time to visit. If not, please follow us on Facebook as we post progress photos as often as possible.

Spotlight on Board Member: Wes Finch

WFinch

Wes Finch is the 2011-12 treasurer and a St. Francis Manor Foundation board member for two years. Born and raised in Chariton, IA he now resides in Grinnell.

"My favorite part of being a board member is realizing what health care is really all about. There are so many different parts and pieces to make everything work and Dion is a master at it," said Wes.

As a past member of the Grinnell Regional Medical Center and past chairman he has experience to share with St. Francis Manor Foundation. "It seems as if everything has come full circle. Having that experience it certainly broadens one's perspective."

For fun Wes plays golf with friends and seldom misses his granddaughter's games. He also rarely misses Iowa Hawkeye football games, and is pretty much an overall sports enthusiast.

One thing you may not know about Wes? He was invited to play in the pro-Am event at the 1996 Buick Open at Warrick Hills Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan.  There he played with Professional Golfer Mike HeinenI and missed a hole in one by 6 inches!

Needed at St. Francis Manor: Additional Whirlpools

Our two existing whirlpools are 10 and 22 years old. Residents are lifted about 4 feet and swung over the side, then lowered down into the tub. While these whirlpools are still used in many facilities, newer styles of whirlpools, like the Cascade Side Entry, are now available. As part of our renovation process we will be upgrading our two current whirlpools and purchasing two additional whirlpools. This will allow residents on each wing in our facility easy access to a whirlpool bath.

Simply put, four new whirlpools means providing residents with more frequent use of the whirlpools and transforming the bath into a relaxing spa experience.

Our goal? Raise $92,000 to purchase four Cascade Spas to benefit our residents.  We are reaching out to our friends, families and the community for help. If you would like to give, please contact Rebecca Puls at rebeccapuls_sfm@live.com or call 641-236-7592.

Spotlight on Board Member:

Glenyce Conway

GConway

Glenyce has been on the St. Francis Manor Foundation Board since its conception in 2009. This year, 2011-12 she serves as vice chair of the board.

Born and raised in Alpena, South Dakota, where she grew up on a farm, along with five brothers and sisters she attended school in Alpena, and later graduated from Huron College, in Huron, South Dakota.

Glenyce's husband, Denny, moved to Grinnell in 1973, where she joined him in 1974, and they have called Grinnell "home" since.

"I enjoy being a foundation board member because it allows me the opportunity to give back to the community and also because it allows me to work with people whose opinions and experience I respect," said Glenyce. "As a board member, I have learned that no matter how much I think I know, there is always something new to learn."

In her free time Glenyce likes traveling, walking, reading, watching a good movie, and anything involving family.  The Conways have two children, Brian and Emily, and "are lucky to have both of them living nearby."  Glenyce also works at Lincoln Savings Bank in Grinnell.

One thing that you don't know about Glenyce? She has a new grandson, who was born on Valentine's Day, and is enjoying being a grandparent, for the first time.

Charitable Donations from your Personal IRA

LAndersonLast issue we notified you of a special way to give through your IRA.

This year only, you can give directly through an individual IRA or Roth IRA to a charity of your choice until December 31, 2011. Congress recently extended this benefit, and we at St. Francis Manor Foundation urge you to consider this now with your financial consultant. It allows you to transfer funds directly to a charity, and therefore will not be reflected as income on your 2011 taxes.

Already, some have chosen to give in this way. Lucille Anderson, resident of Seeland Park, first heard of this option in March and took advantage of the opportunity. Although she had already given to the Foundation building fund, she decided to take advantage of this special incentive to make charitable gifts through retirement accounts.

"I believe in what the Foundation is doing in order to update the facilities and make for more pleasant surroundings for the residents," said Lucille.  "And because of giving this way, as an extra benefit I won't have to pay income tax on the money I give."
