News around the Synod of Lakes and Prairies

Synod LogoSYNOD MEETS OCT. 2-4 AT MOUNT OLIVET: The Synod of Lakes and Prairies meets Sunday through Tuesday, Oct. 2-4, at Mount Olivet Conference & Retreat Center, Farmington, Minn. In addition to the regular business of the synod, Dave Crittenden, director of stewardship for the General Assembly Mission Council of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), will lead an educational presentation on stewardship Monday evening. Adam CopelandNEW ELCA CONGREGATION WITH PRESBYTERIAN PASTOR REACHES OUT IN FARGO: In Fargo-Moorhead, a metropolitan area of about 200,000 separated by a river and a state line, there are plenty of traditional Christian congregations - Lutheran, Presbyterian and Methodist to name a few. But some of those Lutheran congregations began to notice that there were also a surprising number - 45,000 in their estimation - of young adults who were not connected to any sort of faith community. What to do about it? If the traditional model of church were 'working,' they reasoned, then there would not be this disparity. (Adam Copeland, of the new congregation, is at left.) The complete Presbyterian News Service story can be found at "Project FM."

Minot mucking15 VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MINOT, N.D.: Fifteen volunteers from the eastern part of the Presbytery of the Northern Plains traveled to Minot, N.D., Sept. 10 to assist in flood recovery and the Rev. Nancy Emerson, chair of the presbytery's disaster task force wrote about the trip. "What difference can 15 volunteers make? Plenty," Emerson noted. "By quitting time ... we had logged 105 hours of volunteer labor, gutting a house damaged by the summer floods." At right, volunteers are at work. Emerson's complete story can be found at "Invigorating Exhaustion."

REDWOOD FALLS CONGREGATION'S GIFTS MAKE TV NEWS: The Pine Ridge Reservation Project, an effort to support those in need on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, and the efforts of First Presbyterian Church of Redwood Falls, Minn., made the news recently on KEYC-TV in Mankato. The Presbyterian congregation raised $4,000 for school backpacks and supplies. The television news crew was on hand when trucks were loaded. "We also included a lot in the trailer for teachers," the Rev. Scott Prouty said. "When people know there's a need they're willing to help." The video can be found at "Pine Ridge."

Left BehindDAVIS PUBLISHES 'LEFT BEHIND AND LOVING IT' BOOK: A new book by the Rev. D. Mark Davis provides a "cheeky critique of the popular writings about the end of times," according to Wipf and Stock Publishers. "Left Behind and Loving It" offers readers the opportunity to read "some of the most controversial and scary portions of the Scriptures with the utter confidence that 'God's steadfast love endures forever,'" the publisher noted. Davis is pastor of Heartland Presbyterian Church in Clive, Iowa. Wipf and Stock provide additional details about the book and the opportunity to order at "Left Behind and Loving It."

The resources are at "Worship."

CHANGES COMING TO ORDINATION EXAM PROCESS: Picture it: A candidate for ordination as a teaching elder (minister of the Word and Sacrament) taking all of the standard ordination exams online on a flexible schedule and receiving the results in a matter of days.

That image is the vision of a plan announced by the Presbyteries' Cooperative Committee on Examinations for Candidates (PCC) to move the administration and evaluation of the exams to an online management process. Watkins leadershipAFRICAN AMERICAN LEADERSHIP SEMINAR INSPIRES PARTICIPANTS: If Moses got a call, Flo Watkins (right) got a phone call. Watkins - the first woman and the first African American to serve as pastor of the Seigle Avenue Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, N.C. - recently found her sabbatical interrupted by a series of phone calls and email messages asking her to confirm whether or not she would be attending a seminar for African-American leaders. When she learned that the seminar was intentionally designed to strengthen and nurture the gifts of African American clergy and elders to encourage them to seek out executive and senior leadership roles at all levels of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), she wondered how she was chosen to participate. The complete Presbyterian News Service story can be found at "Leadership."

EGYPTIAN PEACEMAKER URGES DIALOGUE FOLLOWING REVOLUTION: Eleven international peacemakers from different countries around the world will visit congregations and presbyteries of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Sept. 23-Oct. 18. One of those peacemakers is Emad Ramzy Philobbos, professor emeritus of geology at Assiut University in Upper Egypt. The complete news release from the Office of Church Growth can be found at "Transformation Grants."

MINNESOTA NATIVE POSTHUMOUSLY HONORED BY GREATER ATLANTA PRESBYTERY: The Presbytery of Greater Atlanta posthumously honored Ruth Schmidt with a 2010 Peacemaker of Year Award when it met Sept. 22. Born in Mountain Lake, Minn., and educated at Augsburg College, the University of Missouri, and the University of Illinois, Schmidt served as a high school teacher, college professor, dean of humanities of the State University of New York at Albany, provost and professor at Wheaton College, and from 1982 to 1994, the first female president of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga. After her retirement, Schmidt traveled extensively, often working in developing countries, and devoted herself to advocating peace and nonviolence. Every Friday at noon for seven years, beginning with the advent of the Iraq war, Schmidt stood at the corner of Peachtree and 14th Streets in Atlanta, holding a sign that read, "Keep Working for PEACE." She died May 24, 2010.

PRESBYTERIAN DEACON DOWSES FOR WATER: The day jobs of deacons and ruling elders in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) range from CEO to waitress, doctors to clerical workers. But the profession of water dowsing - finding underground water with a forked branch - might be limited to one person. Vernon Bandy is an 80-year-old deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Bozeman, Mont., and a life-long water dowser. Dowsing is an ancient practice. The dowser moves across the land lightly holding a divining rod that twists or jumps toward the desired object. In 16th-century Germany, Martin Luther proclaimed dowsing demonic - and dowsing has been viewed with suspicion by religious folks ever since. The complete Presbyterian News Service story can be found at "Dowsing."
