OrKidstra is now in its fifth year, and once again, the programs are ramping up!
- We've added two new KidPlayers violin programs, one at the Bronson Centre and the other at York Street School. (There were 75 applicants for 50 places!)
- Fourteen Ottawa U. music students now join our professional teachers to work one-on-one with our children (up from 7 last year) and a fantastic group of high school and Ottawa Youth Orchestra teenagers come weekly from across the city to mentor the children as musicians and role models
- And we are in the process of hiring a full-time Program Coordinator!
Now we have to raise the money (over $200,000 a year) to sustain all this activity!
OrKidstra involves 200 children from Centretown and Lowertown -- ninety per cent of whom receive, at no cost, the loan of instruments and semi-private or small-group music lessons. Everyone gets the chance to play in an orchestra and/or sing in a choir.
In their own words...
"When you play in an orchestra, you have to listen to each other. You have to listen to what your mind is saying about being a good instrument player. My mind is saying: Be aware, care about your instrument, do your best and never, never quit because if you do your brain will jiggle and jiggle until something pops out!"
Without our volunteers...
we wouldn't be able to function!
Getting and keeping our strings in shape, for instance. Ottawa lutier Olivia Pelling spent many hours this summer preparing our stringed
instruments for use this fall.
Martha Nabatian is at the Bronson Centre every Thursday, taking attendance, giving out snacks and solving whatever challenges arise.
These are two of over 30 volunteers who help to make our organization tick.
The Leading Note Foundation would like to thank all its faithful individual donors as well as the following corporate and public sector supporters!
