 The NASFT study: "Today's Specialty Food Consumer 2010" was conducted by Mintel International and Toluna USA in July 2010 and surveyed 1,500 adults 18 and older. Highlights were published in the December 2010 Issue of Gourmet News.
- 63% of Americans bought Specialty Food in 2010 (up from 46% in 2009).
- 18-24 year olds purchase most Specialty Foods, followed by 25-34 year olds.
- Women are the most frequent purchasers.
- 70% buy Specialty Foods "to treat myself".
- Specialty food consumers spend more than 4 hrs per week watching Food/Cooking TV and 2 hours on websites related to food.
- Top categories were: chocolate, coffee, oils, cheese and cold beverages.
