Support Maya's Scholars in 2010

Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading a deep and continuing need, is a good book.

– Dr. Maya Angelou

One of the nice traditions we have at the Maya Angelou Academy is having our scholars read and make audio recordings of holiday books. We then send a CD and a copy of the book home to their families. This project encourages our scholars to practice reading aloud, and enables them to share a short story with family members.

I am pleased to be able to share with you an audio recording of one of our scholars reading Ezra Jack Keats’ The Snowy Day. Marco, the reader, struggles to read, but his literacy skills have come a long way in his four-plus months at the Academy. He is 17 years old, has failed a number of grades, and has made some big mistakes, but he loves school, and is always asking staff to work with him on his reading.

This holiday tradition is just one way that we support our students’ literacy skills, and its paying real dividends. At the Maya Angelou Academy, our students are improving their reading skills the equivalent of 1.4 years in reading during their time with us.

As always, and especially during this holiday season, we appreciate your continued support and hope you make a gift that will help us to give our students the quality education they need and deserve.

There's still time to support Maya's Scholars in 2010!

Happy Holidays!
