Arkansas Women-owned Businesses
According to Arkansas Business, there are an estimated 63,100 women-owned businesses in Arkansas. When they asked Little Rock restaurateur, Mary Beth Ringgold, whether women and men do business differently, she said:
"Women in the workplace have historically held positions in administration and organization and have excelled in the management of details. We are adept at multitasking. Combine those traits with our natural instincts towards nurturing, and you have a person thoughtful about formalized processes and who has the ability to work well with people." Continuing in our efforts to make WFA's website (womensfoundationarkansas.org) a "one stop" experience regarding women and girls in Arkansas, we're in the process of building a directory of Arkansas women-owned businesses. Help us reach our goal by submitting information about a woman-owned business you support!

Target Audience
| Nike - RAN |
Women account for 85% of all consumer purchases - from autos to vacations to computers to health care. Nike gets it, and has for quite a while. Can you imagine the powerful "girl power" messages that could be spread through TV, radio, billboards and the Internet if companies chose to portray strong, positive role models for women in their advertising?

Women Atop Their Fields
Elena Aprile, Joy Hirsch, Mary-Claire King and Tal Rabin are members of a rare breed - women scientists at the top of their fields.
Dr. Aprile, a professor of physics at Columbia University, is searching for dark matter. Dr. Hirsch, a professor of neuroscience at Columbia University, maps brain processes. Dr. King, a professor of medical genetics at the University of Washington, studies the genetic basis of common complex medical conditions like breast cancer and mental illness. And Dr. Rabin is a cryptography researcher at I.B.M. All four were in New York for the World Science Festival, and were invited to a 30-minute round-table discussion at The New York Times. They talked about their lives as scientists, the joys and struggles of research, and the specific challenges women in science face... Read the full article on The New York Times website.

Supporting Women: Women's Bureau
Two months before women gained the right to vote, Congress made history by mandating the establishment of the Women's Bureau - the only Federal agency charged with advocating on behalf of America's working women. This year the Bureau marks its 90th anniversary and kicked off its year-long commemoration with First Lady Michelle Obama.
The First Lady stated, "When women don't have the flexibility they need to fulfill their responsibilities as both employees and breadwinners and mothers and daughters, that doesn't just hurt women [...] it puts a strain on the entire household and ultimately on all of our communities."
Under the leadership of Director Sara Manzano-Díaz, promoting workplace flexibility is among the four strategic priorities of the Bureau, as well as promoting women in non-traditional careers like "green" jobs; narrowing the wage gap; and improving services for homeless women veterans.
