Greetings!
This spring, WFA's committees have organized 5 Girls of Promise conferences, re-established our Designing Women event, hosted a Women's History Month Celebration and reviewed grant Letters of Interest. We've also been to Serve the Rock, the Association of Fundraising Professionals International Conference in Chicago and Women's Funding Network's 2011 Conference in Brooklyn.
As summer starts up, we're working on a report (look for it next month!) with numbers on the 2011 Girls of Promise season and will be reaching out to our Girls of Promise alumnae from 2010 to keep our Impact Assessment current. Our 2010 grantees have submitted their mid-year reports and our grants committees are gearing up to begin site visits June-Sept for the 2011 applicants.
We are thrilled to have so many dedicated and inspirational women and men contributing their time, talent and treasure to WFA. Please enjoy the information we've put together for this month's e-Newsletter! |
Small Purse. Big Impact.
During last year's Power of the Purse luncheon, guests emptied their purses and pockets of change to contribute a total sum of $3,259.99 - a fantastic moment where small purses added up to make a BIG impact collectively!
This year, WFA is collecting "small purse" donations all year in its office to be added to the "Small Purse, Big Impact" collection at the Power of the Purse luncheon on Friday, October 21.
The 2011 Power of the Purse committee, chaired by Elizabeth Bintliff, is charging others to do the same - collect change* in your office between now and the luncheon on behalf of the Women's Foundation. Call the WFA office (501/244-9740) for more information.

In Her Opinion
In a commentary posted on Politico, Ms. Foundation for Women President and CEO, Anika Rahman, writes that Mother's Day is overshadowed by economic insecurity and hardship for many women across the nation -- and reminds us how critical it is to support advocacy on their behalf. Referencing new data released last week from a poll conducted by Lake Research Partners for the Ms. Foundation, Rahman notes:
"Though the recession technically ended months ago, the bad times are far from over for growing numbers of women. If anything, they're getting worse...Without quick and effective government action, our nation is likely headed toward a full-blown "womencession" with potentially dire consequences for our long-term economic recovery."

 Supporting Women: NWA Women's Shelter
The Northwest Arkansas Women's Shelter (NWAWS) provides free emergency shelter, food, and clothing to victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. NWAWS provides a free 24-hour crisis phone line (800-775-9011) and services to clients. NWAWS also offers court advocacy, Spanish bilingual services, children's advocacy and programming, community education, support groups, counseling, and a volunteer program.
Domestic violence does not discriminate; therefore, NWAWS clients are from across all demographics in terms of age, race, socioeconomic status, and educational background. NWAWS assists any woman who meets the criteria for emergency intervention and assistance due to domestic violence or sexual assault.
Until May 1, 2009 NWAWS was known as the Benton County Women's Shelter. The shelter began as a task force of local concerned citizens in 1988, and the first shelter was acquired in 1989. Since then they've grown and been able to serve hundreds of people each year.
