Greetings!
Spring is such an exciting time for WFA - since our last e-Newsletter, WFA has celebrated Women's History Month, hosted two Girls of Promise conferences, participated in Serve the Rock, and staff members have learned all sorts of great new information by attending the Association of Fundraising Professionals International Conference in Chicago and Women's Funding Network's 2011 Conference in Brooklyn!
In the upcoming weeks, WFA will be honoring and highlighting some of Arkansas' most talented women designers and hosting the last Girls of Promise conference for the year - at which we will be piloting an alumnae track to help prepare girls for the college application process. We hope to see you there!
Please enjoy the information we've put together for this month's e-Newsletter!

Girls of Promise Alumnae Essay Contest Winners!
Through a blind selection process, WFA's 2011 Designing Women Honorees selected Mary Hefley, Jordan Cross, & Jade Collins as winners of the Girls of Promise Alumnae Essay Contest.
While just snippits of their stories are below, all Designing Women guests will have the honor of meeting these incredible young women on April 28!
Mary attended Girls of Promise at Arkansas Tech University in 2008. Her promise to herself? "I promise to shoot for the stars and achieve my dreams. I promise to not let anyone stand in the way of my 'silly' dreams, and lastly, I promise to keep my head held high and pursue what makes me happy."
Jordan attended Girls of Promise at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2001. She credits Girls of Promise with opening her mind to a world of career choices that she otherwise wouldn't have known about. Jordan said, "When we think of careers such as scientists, or engineers, or even doctors, so many times we assume that males will dominate those fields. That is such a great misconception. Women have just as much potential for success in those careers as men, and even more in certain careers."
Jade attended Girls of Promise at Arkansas Tech University in 2008. It was there that Jade promised herself to never settle for anything less than her best, and not to let anyone make her think that her best was not enough. Jade lives by the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote: "Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you."

Big Deal: Arkansas Women's Business Center
Small businesses are the lifeblood of the American economy. They make significant contributions to the economy and bring innovative products and services to the marketplace.
In Arkansas, the percentage of women-owned small businesses is on the rise. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Advocacy, the number of women-owned businesses in Arkansas increased 17% from 1997-2002.*
To support this rising trend, Winrock International & SBA have established an Arkansas Women's Business Center in El Dorado. The center helps women-owned small businesses start, grow, and compete in global markets by providing training, counseling and access to capital. See this one-pager for a list of services & contact information.

Life Imitates Art - Women in the Media
 | | Click image for link to video of interview with Geena Davis on Gender Inequality in the Media |
Academy Award-winning actor Geena Davis has became an advocate for gender equality in children's entertainment after noticing the limited number of female characters in the G-rated shows she watched with her 2-year-old daughter.
The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in the Media found that "the more hours of television a girl watches, the fewer options she believes she has in life. And the more hours a boy watches, the more sexist his views become."

Be A Man - Support Women's Funds
|
Women's Foundation of Arkansas is proud of the growing number of men who support our mission. Encouraging men's involvement is a growing trend among women's funds because men's support shows girls that everyone believes in their potential.
"I can hold my breath for 7 minutes straight. Coincidentally, 7 is the percentage of philanthropic dollars that goes towards all women's programs. For breath-holding, 7 minutes is a long time, but to support women's programming, 7% isn't much at all."

Women In Aviation, International began in 1990 and was formally established in 1994 to encourage women to seek opportunities in aviation. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, of the nearly 600,000 active pilots in the United States, approximately six percent are women and only slightly more than three percent ATP rated.
