 WFA Receives WRF Grant
The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation (WRF) Board of Directors recently voted to award a $103,000 grant to the Women's Foundation of Arkansas (WFA) to increase their impact on reducing poverty among women in Arkansas.
"Empowering and investing in reducing poverty among women is important as we work to move the needle on poverty in the state," said Dr. Sherece, Y. West, President and CEO of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation. "Our investment in WFA ensures that all Arkansans, particularly women and girls, have the ability to achieve prosperity."
WFA helps women and girls achieve their full potential. In its twelfth year, WFA is building its endowment, sustaining programming, and having a greater impact on poverty reduction and educational attainment for women through its grant-making. WRF's grant will support the implementation of WFA's newly developed strategic business plan.
"Strengthening WFA's program operations will help us realize our vision to expand opportunities for the women and girls of Arkansas," said Lynnette Watts, Executive Director of WFA. (Press release)

Women in the Labor Force: A Databook
The past several decades have been marked by notable changes in women's labor force activities. Women's labor force participation is significantly higher today than it was in the 1970s, particularly among women with children, and a larger share of women work full time and year round than in past decades. Women have increasingly attained higher levels of education; women's earnings as a proportion of men's earnings have also grown over time... ( Full Report)

 National Women's History Project
"Each time a girl opens a book and reads a womanless history,
she learns she is worth less." - Myra Pollack Sadker
History helps us learn who we are, but when we don't know our own history, our power and dreams are immediately diminished. Recognizing the achievements of women in all facets of life - science, community, government, literature, art, sports, medicine - has a huge impact on the development of self-respect and new opportunities for girls and young women.
Every year in March, the NWHP coordinates observances of National Women's History Month throughout the country. The NWHP originated this widely recognized celebration and sets the annual theme, produces educational materials, and chooses particular women to honor nationally for their work. Women's History Month programs, community events, plays, essay contests, and related projects often have wide-ranging effects.
Next month, WFA's e-Newsletter will be filled with information celebrating women's history. |
AEAF High School Business Plan Competition
For the past 11 years, AEAF has hosted such competitions for students in fifth through eighth grades, and for students in the state's two- and four-year colleges and universities. This year, it will extend the opportunity to students in grades 9-12.
Kerri Daniels, AEAF executive director and WFA board member, said her organization is looking for students who are creative, with innovative ideas and want to start their own business one day. The competition, she said, will enable them to experience entrepreneujrship first hand.
