Women's Foundation of Arkansas and the Association de Mujeres de Arkansas will co-host a Conversation discussing the use of popular media to change social behaviors.

Tambo ListenersHallie L. Shoffner, a second year graduate student at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, will present a model provided byMinga Peru that utilizes a popular radio soap
opera to change the perceptions and behavior of listeners.

Melanie Masino, documentary filmmaker, Evangeline Parker, host of Comcast Newsmakers, and Dr. Tracie L. Pasold, ACH Director of Psychological Services in the Adolescent Clinic, will discuss how this model can be applied to effect change in the behavior of and toward women and girls in Arkansas and, more widely, in the U.S.  The evening will be moderated by Meg Matthews, Public Relations Director for the City of Little Rock.  Matthew's extensive background in radio and television will add much to the discussion as she poses the questions to visiting panelists.

Half in Ten: Cutting Poverty in Half in 10 Years

Generous and Wise Giving
It's important to give. Charitable giving is how we express our values. It's how we give back to our communities. It's how we change the world: by supporting those who are in need.

But it's also important to give wisely. After all, you don't have unlimited amounts of money to spend on charity. With thousands of charities to choose from, how can you know that your money is being used appropriately and will have the greatest impact?

Change the World through Wise Giving

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) has a new wise giving website, Change the World With a Giving-and Wise-Heart, designed to help donors think proactively about philanthropy and how they want to improve their communities through giving and volunteering.
IRA Holders Can Still Make 2010 Charitable Gifts
Note: The following discussion is provided for informational purposes only and is not intended to serve as legal or tax advice. For specific information about provisions of the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 affecting charitable contributions, consult your tax adviser or attorney.

Persons aged 70½ or older can again enjoy tax savings by making charitable gifts directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), thanks to a provision of the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010, which was signed into law December 17, 2010. The act also allows charitable distributions made from an IRA in January 2011 to be declared as 2010 gifts, should the IRA holder wish to do so.  More information here.
Another Way to Give Without Touching Your Purse
Viso GiveA new YouTube channel that collects videos posted by nonprofit groups and sorts them by cause will donate a portion of the advertising revenue from views of the clips to the charities, according to the technology news site Mashable.

Organizations receive 60% of ad revenue generated by viewers clicking on their videos.  While YouTube ad payoffs amount to pennies per view, they can add up quickly for popular videos that attract visitors. The new site will also post direct-donation links with all videos.
Women's Voices for Change: Redefining Life After 40
An interesting website for our WFA's women over 40 readers, Women's Voices for Change (WVFC) recognizes the enormous energy and wisdom that prime-of-life women can contribute to the world.

The WVFC community of writers, commenters, and supporters has grown steadily, drawn by a distinctive mix of news, opinion, and reflection from an over-40 women's perspective, coupled with the authoritative medical information that is the site's leading component.  womensvoicesforchange.org
Girls of Promise Alumna Highlight
Marci DunhamMarcie Dunham is currently a sophomore at Flippin High School and is considering her higher education opportunities.  With the help of her school counselor, she attended Girls of Promise at UALR in 2009.

GoP UALR 2009 Hillary Clinton TeamDid attending Girls of Promise have an effect on Marcie's life?  She though so: "I found the experience to be a blast.  At the time I already had in mind what I wanted to do, but I did learn many things I never knew before.  I'd have to say it's affected my life by making me a more confident young lady who is not afraid to be herself and do what she wants to do.  I'd say if any girl gets this oppertunity they should really consider going. Girls of Promise - it is a great way to show girls that they can do anything."

2011 Girls of Promise conferences run from February through April (look at the left-column in "Upcoming Events").  Registration for girls and volunteers is online.  Conferences are free to all participants thanks to donors and  sponsors like Molex Incorporated!  For more information, visit womensfoundationarkansas.org/GirlsofPromise.

Pilot alumnae track:  WFA is piloting an alumnae track at the Girls of Promise - UALR conference on Saturday, April 30 for program alumnae who, like Marcie, attended the 2009 UALR conference.  The track will focus on the how-to's involved in college applications.  For more information and to sign up for this pilot alumnae track, e-mail apotter@womensfoundationarkansas.org.

The world needs science... Science needs women.

And for our women scientists, Agora, created by L'Oreal, is the platform dedicated to exchange and sharing among members of the 'For Women in Science' community. Agora is a meeting place for its members - award laureates, fellowship winners, academics, students and researchers - where they can talk about current advances in scientific research, the place and the role of women in science, their education, national and international careers, and the global development of the L'Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science program. This blog is open to everyone interested in the subject of women in the sciences, everyone who believes that the world needs science and that science needs women.
