Make History This March
Women have the Power to drive growth and balance for the globeWomen's History Month at WFA is focused on celebrating the wisdom and vision of its Founders.  They recognized the needs of women and girls in Arkansas and took action.  Eleven years later, many needs still exist.  Let's use this month designated to women's history to learn:
  • Check out Arkansas's Asset & Opportunity Scorecard .
  • View enlightening facts about women's healthcare.
  • Learn more about the status of women in an article about Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund.
  • Read demographic trends for single parent households (keep in mind that Arkansas ranks 4th in the nation in teen pregnancies).
This information challenges us as women and supporters of the Women's Foundation to continue the effort begun by WFA's Founders.  Historically, women uniting for a common cause has brought great results.  In this case, we can ensure that the women and girls of Arkansas have every opportunity to acquire the necessary skills and guidance to build self-sufficiency and achieve success.   Help make history!  Make a donation to the WFA that will continue and expand our work across the state.
Celebrating WFA's History - A Letter to Founders
Joy Matlock
Dear Women's Foundation of Arkansas Founders:

I wish to express my appreciation for the time I spent with you at the First Annual Founders' Day Tea.  As a member of the Emerging Leaders Pilot Program, I felt that I was among the foremothers, if you will, of the Women's' Foundation, and by extension, our program.

Ms. Cindy Conger gave a champagne toast thanking you for making women and girls in our state your deep interest by giving of your time and resources.  I join her by saying that the seeds you planted in the idea of the Women's Foundation have blossomed into a garden that will nourish this state for many generations.  You have created a legacy of achievement, excellence, leadership, philanthropy, service, and striving for one's personal best that is seen in all of the programs of the Women's Foundation.  From the 8th grade girl who spends her day at a Girls of Promise Conference to the 25 women who were selected as Emerging Leaders in the Pilot Program, your  collective hand has stretched from the past and now reaches into the future of this state.

I congratulate you on this past ten years and how your vision of an organization solely dedicated to the betterment of Arkansas' women and girls came to be.  I stand in hope along with each of you as we continue to witness all of the wonderful things that the Women's Foundation has accomplished and will continue to accomplish in the future.

Sincerely,
Joy E. Matlock, J.D.

Thanks so much for the support of Jill Brown, Girls of Promise - Tech Chair; Jill Bristow, ASU Campus Representative; the amazing women who served on each of these local committee; our emcees, Margy Niel and Shannon Vinson; Tech Student Ambassadors; ASU's Women in Science; Junior Auxilary of Russellville; America Association of University Women - Jonesboro... the list goes on!  Our first two Girls of Promise conferences introduced girls to Arkansas women who are successful in their careers in pharmacy, aviation, higher education, economics, engineering, physical therapy, broadcasting & directing, catering & event planning - and how the STEM curriculum is integral to each of these careers!

This Saturday, March 6, 99 eighth-grade girls are expected to flood the campus of South Arkansas Community College in El Dorado.  In mid-April, UALR will open its doors for 100 eight-grader girls and the first of May will bring 100 eighth-grade girls to NWACC in Bentonville.
