Kathy Giordano is a parent of two adult children with Tourette Syndrome, Kathy Giordano is on staff as a national TSA Education Specialist. Over the past fifteen years, Ms. Giordano has presented workshops concerning educational, behavioral, and advocacy issues related to TS and co-occurring disorders to over 14,000 individuals. Previously, Ms.Giordano had been chair of national TSA's Advocacy Committee.
 
TSAGW holds a monthly informal support group for individuals with TS and families with children who have TS to provide guidance, support, and a place to learn from others who may have shared experiences.  We try to incorporate guest speakers every few months. If you have any topics you would like discussed at the upcoming support group meeting please contact daradeutsch@tsagw.org and if you have any questions you can call TSAGW's main office at 301-681-4133.

Tics, Tourettes, and ADHD

This is the second of a two-part discussion on tics, Tourette syndrome and ADHD.  In the last newsletter, some of the issues of treating individuals who has both tics and ADHD with the traditional stimulant medications of methylphenidate (ex. Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Metadate, Focalin) or amphetamine (ex. Dexadrine, Adderall, Vyvanse) were examined.  In this article some other treatments and issues will be discussed.

"Making Successful Transitions"
Audio Presentation Now Available!

On August 18th, TSA conducted a teleconference on easing back-to-school transitions for students with Tourette Syndrome. The audio was recorded and posted on the TSA website and is now available. This 53 minute audio presentation supplies significant information to families and caregivers with transition needs as they pertain to students attending a new school, new grade or a teacher new to them.

Research Participants Wanted!
Brain Imaging Research
NIH is currently conducting two brain imaging studies to learn more about the roles of two brain chemicals (dopamine and serotonin) in Tourette's syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder (aGO). People with Tourette's syndrome (TS), people with TS and aGO, people with aGO, and healthy people without aGO and without TS, ages 18 to 70 years are needed to participate in brain imaging research studies performed at The Johns Hopkins University and supported by the National Institutes of Health.

New DVD Available FREE from TSA!
The national Tourette Syndrome Association, Inc. (TSA) brought together a committee of experienced educators and parents to produce a new tool that parents can use to introduce teachers, school administrators, clinicians and other school personnel to the facts about Tourette Syndrome and the impact that TS has on many students.

Disability Law and TS
October 4, 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Sheri Abrams (an attorney specializing in disability law) will be speaking at Fairfax Hospital's Physician Center to discuss employment and disability law as it relates to TS and associated disorders. There is no charge for attending and no registration is necessary.

How to Teach Others About TS
October 18, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

To be held at the Maryland Association for Nonprofit Organizations, 8720 Georgia Avenue, Suite 303, Silver Spring, Maryland. Learn how to present information about Tourette syndrome, ADHD, OCD and learning disabilites in this "Train the Trainer" workshop. Many times, school staff needs help recognizing and understanding the symptoms of TS and the associated disorders. This workshop shares details about common accommodations and helps attendees learn to think of creative solutions. Please join us and receive a free training disk complements of TSA!

Bowl-a-thon a Smashing Success
The Tidewater Support Group held its Third Annual Bowl-a-thon on Saturday afternoon, July 11, 2009 at the AMF Lynnhaven Lanes in Virginia Beach, Va. Twenty-five people attended and 15 people bowled, raising $575.00 for TSAGW and the Tidewater Support Group.
