October 2012
How Fearful are You?
Fear is rampant in our world.
I see it in children who are afraid to be judged by their peers. I see it in adults who are also afraid to be judged by their peers. I see it in children who are afraid of the "what-if's" in the world. I see it in adults who are afraid of the "what-if not's".
Fear is rampant among us.
I see it in individuals who isolate because they don't think they have much to offer. I see it in individuals who are afraid of the power they know they have.
Generalized anxiety.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Panic Disorder.
Social Anxiety.
Regardless of the labels we have come to put on ourselves, regardless of how your brain may be genetically wired, the quickest and most efficient way I have found to deal with fear on the front line is to examine your thoughts, minute by minute, second by second. If you are thinking a negative thought in your mind, and you replace it with a positive one, the fearful one cannot exist simultaneously.

For example;
"I am petrified to stand up for myself."
"I speak my mind with ease."

"What if I don't make a goal in the game this weekend?"
"I am a great athlete and I do my personal best in every game."

"My thighs are too big."
"I have beautiful hair "

"I am scared my child will turn out like me."
"I am the perfect parent for my child and I instinctively know how to guide them to good mental health."

"I am so nervous all the time."
"I am fearless."

Even if you don't feel the truth of your positive statement initially, with practice, consistency and a true desire to overcome your fear, you will.

Fear is so pervasive in our world, in our communities, in one another, in ourselves. How we affect the world so it mirrors to us what we want to see, is to speak to ourselves powerfully. It starts with us. How we think, affects how we feel and in turn results in how we behave.

This October, during this beautiful month when the leaves change in New England, I challenge you to change your fear based thoughts into what you'd like them to be. It might surprise you to notice how often fear controls our every move. Is that okay with you? Become aware of the choice to drop new seeds in the place of old, negative, self-defeating thoughts. You may not notice the results immediately, but over time, you will.

Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Happy October!

Back to School Tips
for Trichsters & Picksters of All Ages

September means Back to School...and for those with trich and skin picking that can also mean an increase in unwanted behavior. TLC is here to help!

According to TLC Scientific Advisory Board members Suzanne Mouton-Odum, PhD, and Ruth Goldfinger Golomb, MEd, LCPC, "most children with (BFRBs) experience some resumption of the behavior during the first quarter of the school year...It is most important to try NOT to be surprised by a setback."
And it's not just young kids that experience a September resurgence of urges: older teens, college students and parents with BFRBs may have an increase in these behaviors as schedules fill up and pressures mount.

Whether you're 12, 22, or 42, here are some tools for all ages:
