Communication

Communication is everything. It helps us to be clear in our thoughts, our feelings and our actions. It is crucial, that as adults, we teach children how to communicate well so that they feel heard and validated. Low self- esteem is quite often rooted in the perception that we are misunderstood. To enhance communication, here is an activity I like to do both at home with my own children and in my office with clients. Ask individuals to rate their experiences (their day at school, play dates, social events, etc.) on a scale from 1-10. Whether your children are highly verbal or don't say much at all, this activity is for both parties. By answering this simple question, as parents, teachers and therapists, we receive a lot of information. For example, if you ask your kids every day how their day was on a scale of 1-10 and they consistently rate it an "8"- when they tell you one afternoon it was a "6" or "7", you will know there is something that likely requires further discussion. Similarly, if they share with you that their day rated a "10"- that is equally as important as your child is letting you know something that happened that was of value to them. This information helps you to come to know your child even better and deepen your relationship as they grow and inevitably spend more time out in the world.

Consider giving the activity a try.

It's also a good conversation starter at the dinner table. This activity allows adults to also contribute their own information and to feel heard. It is good for kids to see that their parents have things to share about their day and about themselves that sometimes are independent of being a parent. Because I believe so strongly in the power of communication and what it does for our well-being, I have created Planting the Seeds, a line of Positive Energy Cards for Kids and their Parents. The cards are geared towards children ages 5-8 and are designed to encourage meaningful conversation in our families. If you are interested in purchasing for yourself or for someone else, please visit  www.JillSylvester.com. They are also being sold at the Toy Box and Storybook Cove, both in Hanover.

As we are back into school and work routines, make communicating with your children, partners and loved ones an important part of your day. The rewards are endless and ultimately help us master the art of being present in our lives.

Happy October!

Note from Jill: Since communication is the topic this month, for those of you who are interested in learning how to communicate with loved ones on the other side, this book is practical and grounded in its content.
Quote of the Month:

"Finish each day and be done with it, You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt creep in. Forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it well and serenely."

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
