Just Be

Perhaps it is the kind of winter we've had that finds many of us retreating, finding oneself in a rut, feeling depressed, or needing the space to be alone in order to get clearer than we have been. Sometimes, no matter the season, we need to take the time to just be.  This current theme of just being has caused me to wonder how often we teach our children to just be when they, too, find themselves in this space. How often do we allow ourselves to simply be without feeling the angst of labeling ourselves depressed or adding insult to injury by feeling that there is something wrong with us for doing what our bodies are naturally calling us to do?

At times, our bodies require us to take the hibernation we need in order to sit with feelings of fear, sadness, grief, uncertainty and to honor these feelings that are a normal part of the human spirit. Only by embracing and being with these intensely uncomfortable feelings can we grasp the valuable lessons they often contain. How do we adults role model for our children how to move through these moods and feelings that are as natural as the sun rising and setting each day?

Sometimes we need to take breaks, from people, places, and things in order to reevaluate, to release and open to new energies that await us, to explore, to understand, or to rebuild. Fully take this time for yourself and contemplate how consequently you are teaching your children to move with the ebb and flows of the tides of life. It doesn't necessarily mean you are clinically depressed or out of touch with reality.  It may mean you are listening to what your body is encouraging you to do. By deeply listening to these messages we are given an opportunity to grow developmentally and spiritually in order to truly feel well.

There is a beautiful quote in the book, "Dark Nights of The Soul," by Thomas Moore that is fitting here: " It has occurred to me since that perhaps what we call depression isn't really a disorder at all but, like physical pain, an alarm of sorts, alerting us that something is undoubtedly wrong; that perhaps it is time to stop take a time-out, take as long as it takes, and attend to the unaddressed business of filling our souls."

Take your alone time, however that time looks for you.  Set an example for your children to enjoy their own company when you recognize they may need that timeout, too. They, as you, may present as irritable, anxious, or sad.Show your children how to honor their uncomfortable feelings and move through them, whether they are moving through them by singing, writing, drawing, reading or playing in their rooms with toys on their shelves alone. Remind them, in your own way, this too, shall pass.

Come to appreciate both the power and wisdom of silence and space.  If you are learning this as an adult, it takes time and effort, but it is well worth it.  Imagine how much further along our children will be when they are adults, if they learn to honor the messages of their bodies now.

To a Peaceful and Illuminating March,

Jill
