Spirituality in all of Our Moments
I love this time of year. No matter
how you choose to express your faith and beliefs, December is a spiritual time.
Among the many ways of honoring customs and traditions that bring us comfort
and connection to something greater than ourselves, we are simultaneously
honoring the sacred within ourselves when we take part in those traditions. By
taking time to engage in our own spiritual practices, whether in community,
with a select few, or alone with ourselves, we give ourselves the beautiful
gift of opening to the power of spirit, and acknowledging that it is truly
every where. We only need open our minds and hearts to experience it.
For me, the spiritual is in the
scene of the manger as I consider the awesomeness of Mary's responsibility as a
mother by bringing such beauty into the world, and also in the stillness of
Christmas Eve and all its magic. Yet, I also find the spiritual in my life
experiences, from the big ones to the little ones. I experience this in my
children, my marriage, and in the responsibilities that come with caring for my
family and being a part of a dynamic where I am required to lead and teach, and
also where I learn and grow. I find the spiritual in my community where I
experience being a small part of the whole, and how that leads me to support
and be supported, to connect and deepen friendships and to contribute to the shared
goals of others in order to experience
success. I experience the spiritual in private moments with clients when I know
my role is to listen and help guide, and where I always end up learning and
being guided. I am reminded of a patient I worked with on an addictions unit
where I completed my internship. This person, during a family meeting, shared
that she was scared to be without drugs because when the pain got so bad, she
was afraid she would not have enough strength to get through her painful
memories without those resources. It was all she had ever known. I recall the
intensity of her fear and of her courage to express those fears. I found spirit
there, in the presence of honesty and truth, for it helped me to face my own
fears and to acknowledge those within myself. It is spiritual experiences such
as these that help me to grow and to connect more deeply with my true self.
As I reflect on my experiences this
past year, with all of its challenges and its beauty, I am grateful for where
it has brought me and where I feel it is leading me. Where do you experience the
sacred of spirit? Whether surrounded by
family, friends, co-workers or in moments alone, do you stop to see, feel
and/or hear its presence? Give yourself the gift of contemplation and
reflection this season, in order to feel the power of that force guiding your
life. You only need to open yourself up to the magic of it. Seek and you shall
find.
