March is National Nutrition Month
In the U.S. the national obesity rate declined slightly to 26.1% in 2011, from 26.6% in 2010. Despite the slight decline in obesity at the national level, more than 2 in 10 adults remain obese in all but one U.S. state. Healthy behaviors are highly correlated with low obesity levels, while poor health outcomes are strongly correlated with high obesity rates, according to a state-level correlation analysis of all of the 55 items the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index measures. Eating healthily, exercising frequently, not smoking, and having easy access to a place to exercise are among the behaviors or situations most strongly correlated with low obesity rates. Oriental medicine tailors diets to incorporate a variety of foods and herbs that best serve individuals' health needs. Categorizing tastes into five flavors, spicy, sweet, sour, bitter and salty, Oriental medicine encourages a balanced combination. In addition to a colorful diet, Traditional Chinese Medicine, offered at PIHMA, includes acupuncture, herbal medicine and bodywork. Because nutrition is an important part a balanced lifestyle, PIHMA is offering half off all acupuncture treatments during March to anyone who mentions this newsletter special. This applies to initial visits and follow-up treatments.
