Commodore's Message & Update
From Your Commodore Paul Kresge
| It was a great opening weekend for the Dillon Yacht Club. Even though the lake is down, 12 teams showed up to race and enjoy the fantastic weather and nice winds. Thanks to Dave Baker's hangover, I was able to fill in for him on Sunday and had a fun time sailing with Wayne Sauer and Brian Strathman. We had some very spirited races in the J/22 class. The 22 Fleet is a great group of sailors and a very active fleet. Thanks for letting me play!
The marina is still under construction and is doing its best to accommodate the patrons and club members while finishing up the expansion. BUT, be careful walking around the area. OSHA probably would not approve of any of the access points to the docks!
The ramp is open and there is plenty of water to launch if your trailer allows it. If you want to track the lake level, go to Denver Water and click the tab Supply/Planning. It will give in and out flows plus the elevation of the lake.
The Etchells fleet did a great job of running the races Saturday and Sunday.
At Saturday night's Rhumbline we had great sushi that included some of the hottest wasabi. It was really fun to watch the participants eat a little and them howl as the heat kicked in! I can tell that Robin Jackson is going to do a great job with these this season.
Here's a quote from the Wayzata YC that parallels the DYC:
· The things we don't do: We don't have a bar, a restaurant, a "model room" of our past glories, blue blazers, and anyone who suggests getting a pool is thrown off the dock. We are not a country club with a sailing program, and our lack of "ancillary revenue sources" like a bar or restaurant means that we are free to throw some great parties after the race and make everyone feel welcome.
In short, we focus our energy on providing a solid base for excellent racing programs, and we try to keep it simple, friendly, and fun.
Our 2011 season open so come on out and join the fun that we have!
Star sailors Tim Seeling and Steve Gunther (our former Treasurer) are sailing in the Star Western Hemisphere Spring Championships hosted by the Island Bay YC in Springfield IL. Racing begins this Wednesday and you can follow them on KatTack.
Frankie Kelble and Greg Schertz were part of the 24 teams that sailed the 2011 J/24 Nationals held at the Dallas Corinthian YC. Frank sailed with Dave Irwin (rumored to be returning to Dillon this year) and Greg sailed with Chris Snow. Greg's team on New Rules finished 3rd and Frank's team on I be a J 2 finished 4th.
Registration is on line for the 2011 Dillon Open. Final touches are being made to the Dillon Open website but online registration is now open. The Open is July 29-31 and is less than two months away so register early and don't miss out. Vice Commodore Tim Pleune is looking for volunteers. We have a great team putting together this year's event but we can always use additional help. Contact Tim at timp@boaaaa.com.
The Jr's are going to the Olympic Festival in San Diego. Next month a couple of DYC Jr Teams are traveling to San Diego to compete in the Jr Olympic Festival. I'm sure they could use some help in defraying expenses so contact Jeff O'Neill or Vickie Ragle for details. |
Peak One Regatta Recap
Glorious Weekend and Great Start to the Season.
|
From the moment you drive down Marina Road, you notice everything would be different this year for Peak One regatta. You can't help but notice that the lake level is down and there are islands appearing where none were before. There are plenty of boats in the water and lots of activity buzzing around so it was business as usual. The next thing you notice is this will not be the blow-down weekend that Peak One has been the last 3-4 years.
Weekend proved to have very variable winds. There was a haze settling in the air from Keystone and Arizona fires that detracted from the stunning vista of snow on the peaks surrounding the lake. These were just a few of the wonders that you enjoyed when the winds were light. J22 was scheduled to provide race committee, but Etchells were the only fleet unable to launch boats so Etchells and J22 swapped race committee weekends. Etchells fleet did a fantastic job with race committee and Greg Schertz joined Guy on chase boat to capture some great photos. Junior Program Update - Kickoff June 27th
Come Out to Support Friday Night Races
| DYC Junior Sail program is getting excited about starting to prepare, clean and organize the club house starting on June 20th! We have great hopes that the lake levels will start to rise soon!
The week of June 20th will be spent cleaning and organizing both the club house and the boats . We will spend time getting all boats mussel inspected and rigged as well as getting our run abouts and outboards ready. During this prep time it will be Stacey, James, Jordan and some volunteers. If anyone is interested in helping us during this important set up time please let us know as soon as possible. We appreciate any and all help!
The junior camp will officially kick off on Monday, June 27th and will continue for 9 weeks. Every Friday night starting in July we will have junior races and we ask that parents and supporters get involved in this fun evening event. We will start near the Tiki bar and pick up parents and supporters on our pontoon boat. We will race off of the end of Dock A. Please feel free to bring beverages, snacks and lots of support for our junior racers!
More information on any of the above items as well as more details on the entire junior program may be obtained by contacting Stacey Brooks directly. She is happy to answer any questions you may have! Looking forward to a great summer!

Scott Snyder Finishes 3rd as Member of Bermuda National Team
International Invitational Race Week
| Scott Snyder just returned from the 2011 International Invitational Race Week where, as a member of the Bermuda National Team as a trimmer, Team Sadiiqi finished Third overall. After a slow start in the 5-day regatta, Team Sadiiqi was the strongest boat over the last three days and finished on the podium just two points behind second place. Scott, and other Colorado sailors won the prestigious regatta in 2010.
