An encouraging message from Pam

April 2010
Got Weaknesses?  Good!
I saw a billboard coming back from Houston the other day: MAXIMIZE YOUR STRENGTHS: MINIMIZE YOUR WEAKNESSES.  That's the slant of the world's way of thinking these days, focusing on those things that we do so well. But how often do you pay attention to those things you don't do well, like those annoying little defects we call weaknesses. As for me, pinpointing those deficiencies are actually blessings in disguise.  I'm ever so aware of my weaknesses! Are you?

Likely if you've never given it much thought, you probably should. In what aspects of your single motherhood are you especially at risk? Loneliness, your appearance, sexual temptations, or the dreary "why me" questions? Everyone has weaknesses and becoming aware of them is a wise thing to do. Or didn't you know that if your "weakness door" is left unnoticed, you'll become a victim unaware?

Lauren, a single mom, talked about her susceptible areas. One of those was getting involved too soon. "You have to heal from your past relationships. You need to know what you're healing from. You might not know you're insecure or that your self-esteem is low. You're left exposed to the premature desire for affection. You haven't had time to figure out what went wrong with your last relationship."

Another person added, "Your weaknesses are reminders of God's power and ability to provide for your needs. When you face trials or you're frustrated by your inadequacies, take a good look at the God you serve. He is bigger than your problems.  He will empower you with a much greater strength than you could ever generate on your own."

So friend, celebrate your shortcomings as an avenue for God to prove Himself strong. Christ's power is best displayed against the backdrop of your weakness. God affirms in 2 Corinthians 12: 8-10 - "My grace is enough. It's all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness."  In other words, weakness is "strength," if God's in it!

The story is told of Charles Spurgeon who was riding home one night feeling depressed and a verse came to mind, "My grace is sufficient for you." He began to imagine a little fish in the Thames River, afraid to drink too much for fear the river would run dry. Then Father Thames said," Drink away, oh little fish. My stream is sufficient for you."

Then he imagined a man climbing a high mountain fearing that his breathing might exhaust all the supply of oxygen in the air. The Creator of the mountains boomed forth, "Breathe away, oh man. My atmosphere is sufficient for you."

And just imagine: a single mom approached the Throne of THE ALMIGHTY, fearing God's supply would run short. Then the all-sufficient Master of the Universe, the One who owns all things spoke forth, "Take comfort, oh woman. My resources are sufficient for you."

What is it you need the most as a single mom? What is God's spirit telling you?

Lovin' you,

Pam
