Abraham has always been my hero. He was a radical for God: radical: one who operates in the excess for a cause. Hebrews 11:8 - And by faith Abraham... obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. Can you imagine? God telling you to pack up the car without any loot in your suitcase and travel to Bangladesh without knowing who will meet you at the airport? Now that is faith without sight! In fact, if you can "see," then it's not faith but mere reasoning.
Last month God allowed Shelley and me the opportunity to accept an invitation to go to Washington, DC, for a Congressional briefing, telling select members of Congress and their staffers about the Oklahoma statewide single mothers' conference, Survive 'N' Thrive. Of course, it was our hopes that the representatives would invite the Survive 'N' Thrive Conference to their states, but actually, we went blindly not knowing exactly what God would do out of that assignment. Genuine faith is like that. You just "GO," and leave the results with God.
What will God do from that Washington trip? I'm not sure! But this I do know. Genuine faith is like a navigator of a ship on the seas who can't see the land. They simply mark their progress on a chart and follow what appears to be a giant chalk line across the ocean while looking UP to the sky and determining their course by the sun.
Faith that pleases God does the same. It looks UP and moves along by following the inside navigation of God's Son, the Holy Spirit. And ultimately, though one might find themselves at times feeling lost at sea, the Lord will eventually open the eyes of the sailor to see the glorious shoreline and there find confirmation that He's been at work behind the clouds all along.
What is it today that demands you to live by faith? What has God asked you to do and you don't know why? In what ways is God asking you to sail forward without seeing the end results? My friend, the opportunity stands right before you: the chance to be a radical for Christ, one who operates in the excess for a cause. God tells us what our cause ought to be. Our cause is to make God look great, then trust Him even though we can't see the end results.
This month I've learned a new definition of faith. It's believing that the God who called me to an assignment in Washington, DC, is the One who will provide for its accomplishment. In that, I can wait with great resolve and anticipation. Amen?
