Tarrant County confirms third human case of West Nile Virus in Burleson
Tarrant County Public Health confirmed Aug. 21 that there is a third human case of West Nile Virus in Burleson. The affected person lives in the 300 block of Angela Drive. The second human case of West Nile Virus was reported Aug. 15 in the 700 block of Northwest James Circle. The first was reported July 24 in the 900 block of Timber Ridge Court. All three are in the north part of Burleson. For updates, go to the West Nile Virus page on the City website. In July, Burleson confirmed two positive West Nile Virus (WNV) mosquito pools in the area of Lena Lane and Robin Court. On July 20, another confirmed WNV mosquito pool was reported from the area of the Burleson Police Department (corner of Renfro Street and Johnson Avenue). West Nile Virus is spread by infected mosquitoes. In most cases, mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread West Nile Virus to humans and other animals when they bite. Read More |
Volunteer to beautify Burleson Sept. 22
It's time to beautify Burleson retail corridors and drainage channels! The City and Keep Burleson Beautiful will host the Burleson Trash-Off on Saturday, Sept. 22. Join the mission to clean up what others have left behind in the city's retail corridors as well as in drainage channels during the two-hour event that starts at 9 a.m. After the cleanup, volunteers will gather at Warren Park, 301 S.W. Johnson Ave., for lunch and a prize ceremony. Volunteers should call the City's environmental services office in advance to register and receive a cleanup location assignment. Construction of Renfro/Brushy Mound median and turn lane starts Aug. 29
Construction of the Renfro Street/Brushy Mound Road median turn lane project is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Aug. 29. Brushy Mound will be closed at Renfro Street for at least 60 days. The project will take approximately four months. Residents are advised to use Sierra Vista at Alsbury Boulevard to access the neighborhood.The project was awarded by city council in June. It consists of the removal of part of the existing median on Renfro, between McAlister and Shady Oaks, for the construction of dedicated left turn lanes for access to Brushy Mound. In addition, the southbound lanes of Renfro, in this area, will be reconstructed. Electric conduit will be installed to serve the future traffic signal at Renfro and McAlister Road. Police arrest neighbor for murder
Burleson Police arrested a 51-year-old Burleson man for murder Sunday after an argument between neighbors left a 45-year-old Burleson man dead. Police responded to a report of a shooting on Jasmine Court at 7:49 p.m. on Aug. 19. The victim, Bradley Darren Kidd, was dead when officers arrived. Gary Evans Matthews surrendered to police. Racetrac robber is caught on camera
The suspect who robbed a clerk at Racetrac Aug. 11 was caught on camera. He was described as a white male, 6-feet tall, 20-27 years of age, 175-185 pounds, short brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a plaid baseball-style cap, blue and white striped shirt, white socks and brown sandals. The aggravated robbery was committed at 11:38 p.m. at the store at 775 N.E. Public hearing on proposed FY 2012-2013 tax rate is Tuesday, Sept. 4
On Sept. 4 (this meeting is on Tuesday since Labor Day is Sept. 3), the City will host the second public hearing on the proposed tax rate for Fiscal Year 2012-2013 and the first reading of the budget, tax rate and water/wastewater rate ordinances. The Sept. 4 hearing and readings are on the 7 p.m. agenda. On Monday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m., City staff will present the final reading of the budget, tax rate, water/wastewater rate ordinances and the minute order to ratify the tax revenue and minute order to adopt the fee schedule to council. Name that Burleson City Councilman!
Which member of the Burleson City Council took a six year break between terms on the Burleson City Council? Rick Green, Place 2 councilmember, was elected to council for two terms, 2000-2004, then again in 2010. He just won re-election, unopposed, in 2012. Green also served on the City's Planning and Zoning Commission, 1999-2000. The 48-year-old elected official has been a Burleson resident for 20 years. He grew up in Cleburne, where he graduated from Cleburne High School in 1982. Green earned a degree in business management from LeTourneau University. He is a realtor with the Green Team from Keller Williams. He is also a partner in G&G Roofit. The councilmember and his wife Shelley (also a realtor) share two daughters. Most City facilities close for Labor Day City facilities will be closed Monday, Sept. 3, in observance of Labor Day. There will be no trash or curbside recycling collection on Labor Day in Burleson. The indoor pool, as well as the BRiCk, will be closed on Labor Day. The Burleson Public Library will be open during normal hours on Saturday, Sept. 1, will close Sunday and Monday, and will reopen for patrons on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The Burleson Animal Shelter will also be open on Saturday, Sept. 1, then will reopen on Sept. 4. The Monday, Sept. 3, Burleson City Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Johnson and Tarrant counties approve 90-day bans on outdoor burning
On Aug. 7, the Tarrant County Commissioners Court approved a ban on outdoor burning for the unincorporated areas of Tarrant County for the next 90 days. This ban is in response to the drought. A violation of this court order is a Class C misdemeanor. Read the Tarrant County news release.
