Community showed WFAA Daybreak viewers what makes Burleson special
WFAA TV's Daybreak Show invited Burleson to be the feature city Aug. 3, and we accepted! The whole community got involved and we had a great showing - 250-plus Burleson residents and students - live, in Victory Park, 5 a.m.-7 a.m. Richard Crummel, superintendent of the Burleson Independent School District; Dale Dexheimer, president of the Burleson Heritage Foundation; James Sullivan, president of the Burleson Youth Association; and Mayor Ken Shetter (accompanied by Mayor Pro Tem Stuart Gillaspie and Councilmember Dan McClendon) were interviewed during the show. Busloads of cheerleaders, band members and athletes from Burleson High School and Centennial High School as well as the Burleson Youth Association, Spartans Youth Association, Burleson Heritage Foundation, and several businesses represented Burleson proudly. Johnson and Tarrant counties approve 90-day bans on outdoor burning
Tuesday, the Tarrant County Commissioners Court approved a ban on outdoor burning for the unincorporated areas of Tarrant County for the next 90 days. This ban is in response to the drought. A violation of this court order is a Class C misdemeanor. Read the Tarrant County news release. City manager presents proposed FY 2012-2013 budget in Aug. 8 workshop

In the three-hour workshop, City Manager Dale Cheatham reviews the major changes as well as new items in the proposed Fiscal Year 2012-2013 City budget. Burleson Police Department's Citizens Police Academy students investigate "mock homicide"
Members of the Burleson Police Department's Citizens Police Academy investigated a mock homicide Aug. 4 as part of the 10-week program that gave them an inside look at law enforcement. The "victim" was Orville, a philanderer with several girlfriends. Students looked over the crime scene, talked to the responding officer, talked to a nosy neighbor and a local waitress, then gathered back at the police station to present their findings. The Citizens Police Academy topics include the department's organization, recruiting process, Texas Penal Code, criminal investigations, search and seizure, building searches, traffic law enforcement, narcotics investigation, SWAT, patrol procedures, and more. Students, apply by Aug. 17 for seat on City boards, committee and commission The application for youth to apply for City boards and commissions is available online. In March, city council unanimously voted to appoint voting student members to the Burleson Library Board, Parks Board, Cemetery Board, Animal Shelter Advisory Board, and Old Town Design Standards Review Committee. Youth members of these boards must be 13-17 years old. One youth would be added to each board or committee. Council also unanimously approved including a student voting member on the Planning and Zoning Commission. That student must be 15-17 years old. One youth would be added to the commission. Youth must live in the city limits and be of age for the board they choose on Oct. 1. Read News Release |
Register at the BRiCk for softball, flag football and kickball leagues
It's time to register for softball, flag football, and kickball! Register at the BRiCk, 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Flag Football (8 on 8) signups started Aug. 6 and continue through Sept. 14. League play starts Sept. 22 at Chisenhall Fields Sports Complex. Registration is limited to the first seven teams. Sign up for Co-Ed, Men's and Church softball starting Aug. 13. League play begins Sept. 24 at Hidden Creek Sports Complex. Registration is limited to the first nine teams in each league. And, Co-Ed Recreation Kickball signup also starts Aug. 13. League play begins Sept. 28 at Hidden Creek Sports Complex. Registration is limited to the first nine teams. This is an eight-game league. Most City facilities close for Labor Day City facilities will be closed Monday, Sept. 3, in observance of Labor Day. There will be no trash or curbside recycling collection on Labor Day in Burleson. The outdoor pool at the BRiCk closes for the season on Aug. 19.The indoor pool, as well as the BRiCk, will be closed on Labor Day. The Burleson Public Library will be open during normal hours on Saturday, Sept. 1, will close Sunday and Monday, and will reopen for patrons on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The Burleson Animal Shelter will also be open on Saturday, Sept. 1, then will reopen on Sept. 4. The Monday, Sept. 3, Burleson City Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 4. The work session will begin at 6 p.m. and the regular meeting starts at 7 p.m. at city hall. Read News Release |
Name that Burleson city councilman!
Which member of the Burleson City Council is a pilot for Grace Flight America, which provides free travel in a private aircraft for people with medical and financial needs? It's Dan McClendon, council member, Place 5. McClendon was elected to council in 2007. He is currently serving his third two-year term. McClendon is a husband, father of four and a grandfather. He also owns McClendon Construction Company in Burleson. He graduated from Kerens High School and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from North Texas State University. He moved to the Burleson area in 1977. McClendon is a member of his church's chancel choir as well as a popular local gospel group. To read more, go to the City Council page on the City website. |
MedStar offers StarSaver membership for those who live or work in Burleson
If you live or work in the MedStar service area (this includes Burleson), you are eligible for a StarSaver membership with MedStar Emergency Medical Services. MedStar contracts with the City of Burleson to provide ground ambulance service. The StarSaver Membership has an annual membership fee of $55 for those with health insurance or $110 for those without health insurance. The StarSaver membership covers the entire household.
