Grab your children, camera and Easter baskets and join in the annual Bunny Daze Easter Eggstravaganza at the BRiCk at Bartlett Park. This is a free event sponsored by the City.The fun takes place between noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. There will be on-stage performances, carnival games, face painting, cotton candy and hot dogs. Peter Cottontail is the special guest! The Easter Egg Hunt starts at 2 p.m. The children, up to age 12, will be divided into age groups before the hunt begins. For more, call Ashley Osborne at the BRiCk at 817-426-9116.

Havens earns Ofelia BlairChris Havens, Ofelia Blair Outstanding Character Award Outstanding Character Award
His commitment and dedication to the Burleson Police Department are unquestionable. And his connection to the namesake of the Ofelia Blair Outstanding Character Award, which Commander Chris Havens accepted at the police department's annual awards banquet, makes the honor bittersweet. The Ofelia Blair Outstanding Character Award is named in honor of the former clerk for the department's criminal investigations section who lost her battle to cancer in 2003. Prior to being appointed commander, Havens was the sergeant over the criminal investigations section. Havens has more than 20 years of law enforcement experience. He started his career with the Dallas Police Department in 1988 then was hired by Burleson in 1994. Read More

Grab some goggles for the second annual Aqua Egg Hunt at the BRiCk

Last year's Aqua Egg Hunt has officially become an annual event with the hunt slated for Saturday, March 31, 10 a.m.-Aqua Egg Hunt 2011noon, at the BRiCk, 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. The Aqua Egg Hunt precedes Bunny Daze. Preregistration is recommended for the Aqua Egg Hunt to expedite the check-in process. The cost is $2 per child. Children, up to 11 years old, will be divided into four groups. Participants need to don swimsuits and goggles to search for plastic eggs in the pool. The Aqua Egg Hunt will take place in the play structure area and the lap pool. Children will redeem their plastic eggs for one Easter goody bag. Call the BRiCk at 817-426-9104 for more information.

Firefighters earn Valor Award from Texas Fire Chiefs Association for August 2011 rescue of tower worker 

Four Burleson firefighters as well as a Crowley firefighterTexas Fire Chiefs Valor Award were honored with the Valor Award by the Texas Fire Chiefs Association for the role they played in the August 2011 high angle rescue of a cell tower worker. Burleson Fire Chief Gary Wisdom nominated Burleson firefighters Dallas Fowler, Bill Buchanan and Matt Moseley and Fire Lt. Jeremiah Lozier as well as Crowley firefighter Gary Sansing. The Texas Fire Chiefs Association recognizes Texas firefighters who have placed themselves in mortal danger to save a human life. The rescue that triggered the award started at 7:48 p.m. on Aug. 3. A communication tower worker was trapped about 700 feet in the air. The five firefighters plus a support crew worked together to get the worker back on solid ground seven hours later. Read More

City will dedicate its first universally accessible park Saturday, April 7 

Burleson is dedicating the City's first fully accessible park for children of all abilities on Saturday, April 7, at 10 a.m. Centennial Park is located at 1100 Scarlet Sage Pkwy., off of McAlister Road. This park will allow physically challenged children and able-bodied children to play together. The surface of the playground equipment is a mixture of a rubberized material and engineered wood fiber to aid in mobility. A shade structure shields the playground. Ramps are ADA compliant. The park also includes an 18-space parking lot, concrete walk, concrete pad for a future pavilion, landscaping, minimal irrigation, drinking fountain, trash cans, benches and a restroom. Read More

Tim Mabry, Community PolicingMabry is tapped by his peers for Community Policing Award

In 2011, Officer Tim Mabry took home the 2010 Rookie of the Year honors at the Burleson Police Department banquet. In 2012, the officer earned the department's Community Policing Award. According to the nomination, Mabry has "truly embraced the concept of community oriented policing. He is always searching for better ways to perform his job and serve the community. He has set the highest standards for himself in all that he does at the department. He is dedicated to the concept of teamwork within the community and sets an example for others to follow." Reservation-only dinner with paired wines moves from March 30 to April 20

The date for the reservation-only dinner with paired wines at the Restaurant at Hidden Creek Golf Course has moved from March 30 to Friday, April 20.  The dinner includes four courses (appetizer, salad, entrée, and dessert) and one wine paired with each course. Linda Powell will be speaking about the wines and the pairing.  A reception for guests starts at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The price is $50 per person. Reservations may be made by calling the golf course at 817-447-4444.

Paw Pals teaches children how to bePaw Pals Animal Care Academy better pet owners

The Burleson Animal Shelter is hosting Paw Pals Animal Care Academy for students who are entering the sixth grade in the 2012-2013 school year. The class is limited to 15 students who must either live in Burleson or attend school in Burleson. This is a free four-week course. Class is 90 minutes, noon to 1:30 p.m., every Saturday, June 2-June 23. The deadline for students to apply for Paw Pals is Friday, April 20. The sessions include bite prevention and responsible pet ownership, grooming and animal training. The Paw Pals Animal Care Academy application, which requires a one-page essay, must be signed by the student's parent or guardian and turned in by April 20. Read More

Friends of the Libary will offer variety of books at book sale April 27-28

The Friends of the Library book sale will be Friday, April 27, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, April 28, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Burleson Public Library. The sale will have a large variety of books including hobbies, self help, cookbooks, travel, religion, adult fiction and nonfiction, as well as numerous young adult and children's books. All books will be offered for $1-$2 with specials offered during the sale. The library is located at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave.

City facilities will close for Good Friday  

Trash and curbside recycling will be collected on Friday, April 6, but most City facilities will be closed for Good Friday. The BRiCk will be open 6 a.m.-3 p.m. on Good Friday, open regular hours on Saturday, and closed on Easter Sunday. The library will be closed Friday-Sunday. The Senior Activity Center will be closed on Good Friday, open for regular hours Saturday, and closed Sunday. The animal shelter will be closed Friday, but open Saturday, April 7. Hidden Creek Golf Course is closed for a redesign, but the pro shop and grill will be open. The compost/mulch/recycling center will be open on Saturday, April 7. Read More

Register to vote by April 12; Early voting for council election starts April 30

The last day to register to vote in the May 12 Burleson City Council election is April 12.  Voters should register with the ballot boxcounty (Johnson or Tarrant) in which they live. If you are a Johnson County resident, call 817-556-6197 or go to Johnson County Elections.  If you are a Tarrant County resident, call 817-831-8683 or go to Tarrant County Elections. Ken Shetter (incumbent) and Larry Pool (challenger) filed for mayor; Rick Green is unopposed for re-election in Place 2; Matt Aiken (incumbent) faces Leslee Clark Ahrend for Place 4; and Brenda Gammon, Ronnie Johnson and Heather Morrill are vying for the Place 6 seat that Pool is vacating. Early voting is April 30-May 4 and May 7-8. Election Day is May 12. All voting is at Burleson City Hall.

Volunteers are needed for City's Don't Mess With Texas Trash-Off April 21

Jump in and volunteer to beautify Burleson April 21 during the Great American Cleanup/Don't Mess with Texas Trash-Off. The event is 9 a.m.-11 a.m. It is citywide. A free thank-you lunch will follow at 11 a.m. at Warren Park on Johnson Avenue. Volunteers of all ages are welcome. Volunteers who are younger than 18 must be supervised by an adult. Participants will be removing litter and debris from retail corridors, residential drainage channels and streets. To sign up as a volunteer and get your site assignment, call Environmental Programs Specialist Bianca Chafin at 817-426-9842 by 5 p.m. on April 19. Read More
