Sgt. Darin PoolSeventeen-year veteran wins Police Supervisor of Year

The recipient of the Burleson Police Department's Supervisor of the Year award leads or is involved in more than half a dozen department programs. Sgt. Darin Pool was honored at the police awards banquet. Pool, 41, joined Burleson in November 1994. He has served as a patrol officer, patrol corporal, detective corporal/crimes against children and has served as a patrol sergeant since 2005. He is certified as a master peace officer, field training officer and coordinator, team leader for the Burleson Police Honor Guard, head advisor for Burleson Police Explorer Post #4911, member of the Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team and the Critical Incident/Stress Management Team, agency coordinator for the Drug Recognition Expert/Drug Evaluation and Classification program, and member of the Rapid Response Task Force/Command Post Operations Team. City earns A+ from Sunshine Review for Sunny Award
website transparency

For the second year in a row, the City of Burleson has earned an A+ from the Sunshine Review for government transparency on the City's website. Burleson is one of 21 city and county governments and school districts in Texas to earn 2012 Sunny Awards. The only Texas cities to earn an A+ in 2012 are Burleson and Arlington. Cities earning an A- include Addison, Austin, El Paso, Fort Worth, Frisco, Houston, Huntsville, Keller, Laredo and New Braunfels. In 2011, Burleson earned a Sunny Award for having a perfect website transparency score. Twelve Texas government websites earned a Sunny Award in 2011.The Sunshine Review is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to government transparency. Editors at Sunshine Review analyzed more than 6,000 government websites and graded each on a 10-point transparency checklist. Burleson's redesigned website includes a link on the homepage to "Open Government/Transparency." Read More

City hosts Injury Prevention and Safe Kids Fair April 20 at Bartlett Park

Grab your kids Friday, April 20, and head to Bartlett Park for the City's Injury Prevention and Safe Kids Community Fair. The free event is 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Get car seats inspected, tour the Fire Safety House, register bicycles and get them inspected, participate in an art contest, initiate an identification file for your child via the police department's Child ID program, learn CPR, find out more about poison prevention, and learn the rules of the game when it comes to pet safety. Door prizes include life jackets, car seats and bicycle helmets. Read More

First he was Rookie of the Year; now Garrett is Police Officer of the Year

In 2010, Officer Chaz Garrett was tapped as Rookie of the Officer Chaz GarrettYear for his work in 2009. In 2012, the officer was on the stage again at the Burleson Police Department's annual awards banquet but this time it was to be recognized as the department's Officer of the Year. Garrett was hired by Burleson in March 2009. His prior law enforcement experience included 11 months as a reserve deputy for the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. Garrett was described as "the one who helps energize the shift and keep the morale high." The Officer of the Year is involved with the Burleson Police Explorers Post. Read More

Register to vote by April 12; Early voting for council election starts April 30

The last day to register to vote in the May 12 Burleson City Council election is April 12.  Voters should register with the county (Johnson or Tarrant) in which they live. If you are aballot box Johnson County resident, call 817-556-6197 or go to Johnson County Elections.  If you are a Tarrant County resident, call 817-831-8683 or go to Tarrant County Elections. There are four seats on the ballot. Ken Shetter (incumbent) and Larry Pool (challenger) have filed for mayor; Rick Green is unopposed for re-election in Place 2; Matt Aiken (incumbent) faces Leslee Clark Ahrend for Place 4; and Brenda Gammon, Ronnie Johnson and Heather Morrill are vying for the Place 6 seat that Pool is vacating. Early voting is April 30-May 4 and May 7-8. Election Day is May 12. All voting is at Burleson City Hall.

Bunny Daze 2011Come on out for Bunny Daze fun!

Grab your children, camera and Easter baskets and join in the annual Bunny Daze Easter Eggstravaganza at the BRiCk at Bartlett Park. This is a free event sponsored by the City.The fun takes place between noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. There will be on-stage performances, carnival games, face painting, cotton candy and hot dogs. Peter Cottontail is the special guest! The Easter Egg Hunt starts at 2 p.m. The children, up to age 12, will be divided into age groups before the hunt begins. For more, call Ashley Osborne at the BRiCk at 817-426-9116.

Police earn Medal of Valor, Medal of Honor and Lifesaving Awards

The Medal of Valor, Lifesaving awards and an Honorary Lifetime Dispatcher award were presented at the Burleson Police Department's annual banquet. The top awards include Officer of the Year Chaz Garrett, Rookie of the Year Brandon Wichman, Supervisor of the Year Sgt. Darin Pool, Civilian Employee of the Year Courtney Haley, Telecommunications Operator of the Year Katie Reynolds, Community Policing Award winner Officer Tim Mabry, and Ofelia Blair Character Award winner Commander Chris Havens. Phil Lewis, a telecommunications operator who had to leave his post due to medical reasons, received a standing ovation when he was presented with the Honorary Lifetime Dispatcher Award. Read More

Grab some goggles for the secondAqua Egg Hunt 2011 annual Aqua Egg Hunt at the BRiCk

Last year's Aqua Egg Hunt has officially become an annual event with the hunt slated for Saturday, March 31, 10 a.m.-noon, at the BRiCk, 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. The Aqua Egg Hunt precedes the Bunny Daze Easter Eggstravaganza. Preregistration is recommended for the Aqua Egg Hunt to expedite the check-in process. The cost is $2 per child. Children, up to 11 years old, will be divided into four groups. Participants need to don swimsuits and goggles to search for plastic eggs in the pool. The Aqua Egg Hunt will take place in the play structure area and the lap pool. Children will redeem their plastic eggs for one Easter goody bag.

Restaurant hosts reservation-only dinner with paired wines March 30

The Restaurant at Hidden Creek Golf Course is hosting a reservation-only dinner with paired wines on Friday, March 30.  The dinner includes four courses (appetizer, salad, entrée, and dessert) and one wine paired with each course. Linda Powell will be speaking about the wines and the pairing.  A reception for guests starts at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The price is $50 per person. Reservations may be made by calling the golf course at 817-447-4444.

Saturday Matinee at the Library features 'Where the Red Fern Grows'

Saturday Matinee at the Library features a classic, "Where the Red Fern Grows." Showtime is 1 p.m. on March 24, at Where the Red Fern Growsthe Burleson Public Library, 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. All ages are welcome to the free showing. Free popcorn and one drink are provided. "Where the Red Fern Grows" is the heartwarming and adventurous tale about a young boy and his quest for his own red-bone hound hunting dogs. Set in the Ozark Mountains during the Great Depression, Billy Coleman works hard and saves his earnings to buy two coonhound pups, Old Dan and Little Ann. The movie follows the inseparable trio as they romp through the Ozarks, trying to tree the elusive "Ghost" raccoon. For more information call the library at 817-426-9210
Get a City Focus and Community Guide

The March 2012 City Focus newsletter and the Spring 2012 Burleson Community Guide are available online. The March City Focus is a two-page newsletter that is published monthly by the City's Communications office. It is distributed via City utility bills. The Burleson Community Guide is a 20-page book created by the Parks and Recreation Department. The guide is mailed. Both are also available on the City website and at Burleson City Hall and the BRiCk.

Hidden Creek Golf Course is closed until Fall 2012 for redesign/realignment

Hidden Creek Golf Course is closed for course play for the redesign and realignment of the course. The project will take approximately five months, with an expected re-opening in the fall of 2012. The pro shop is open 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., seven days a week. The restaurant is open for lunch from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Monday - Friday. The golf course is located at 555 E. Hidden Creek Pkwy.
