ballot boxThree out of four city council races are contested

There were four contested races on the Burleson City Council ballot on Monday, but now there are three. Thursday afternoon, Joseph Markham, who had filed against incumbent Rick Green for Place 2, withdrew his name from the ballot. The May 12, 2012 candidates include: Ken Shetter (incumbent)and Larry Pool (challenger) for mayor; Rick Green (incumbent), Place 2; Matt Aiken (incumbent) and Leslee Clark Ahrend (challenger) for Place 4; and challengers Brenda Gammon, Ronnie Johnson and Heather Morrill for Place 6. Pool is the current Place 6 council member but he opted to run for mayor instead of for re-election to Place 6. The last day to register to vote for the May election is April 12. Early voting starts April 30. Read More

March 11 daylight saving time change triggers cleanup at City cemetery

Daylight saving time means the City's cemetery, Burleson Memorial Park, will be spruced up. Clocks spring forward one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 11. All items that are not permanently attached to the memorial or marker will be removed after the time changes. Items will be removed from gravesites the week of March 11-18. Read More

Dedication of City's first fully accessibleCentennial Park park is April 7 
Burleson is dedicating the City's first fully accessible park for children of all abilities on Saturday, April 7, at 10 a.m. Centennial Park is located at 1100 Scarlet Sage Pkwy., off of McAlister Road. This park will allow physically challenged children and able-bodied children to play together. The surface of the playground equipment is a mixture of a rubberized material and engineered wood fiber to aid in mobility. A shade structure shields the playground. Ramps are ADA compliant. The park also includes an 18-space parking lot, concrete walk, concrete pad for a future pavilion, landscaping, minimal irrigation, drinking fountain, trash cans, benches and a restroom. Read More

Only brush, tree limbs and yard waste are accepted at City compost site

Effective March 6, 2012, the City of Burleson compost site only accepts brush, tree limbs and yard waste.  Residents are no longer able to drop off other wood or wood by-products such as old lumber, desks, plywood, fencing etc., for grinding.  These items will still be collected at the curb during a resident's zone collection week. There are no changes for the drop off of curbside recycling materials at the City's compost center. Residents may still bring curbside recyclable products to this site for processing. The city's compost/mulch/recycling center is located at 620 Memorial Plaza, behind Fire Station #2 and next to Burleson Memorial Cemetery. Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with Patty O'Party at the golf course March 16

Looking for a way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day? Look no further than Hidden Creek Golf Course where the restaurant is hosting a Patty O'Party on the patio. The fun is slated for Friday, March 16, 7 p.m.-10 p.m. There will be live music, bangers and mash (traditional English dish made of potatoes and sausage) for dinner, Chocolate Stout ice cream for dessert and green beer outside on the patio. The cost, $10 per person, covers the food, one glass of beer or wine, and the entertainment. Please RSVP to 817-447-4444. The golf course is located at 555 E. Hidden Creek Pkwy.

Sign up for Spring Fun Camp at BRiCk

The BRiCk is hosting a Spring Fun Camp for students, March 12-16. Campers will participate in group games, arts and crafts, swimming, rock climbing, team building events and more. This camp is geared toward students 6-12 years old. The camp is Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. The cost is $115 for individual BRiCk members; $130 for individual non-members. Change your clocks and change the batteries in smoke detectors Sunday 
Daylight saving time is a great time to remind everyone to check the batteries in their smoke detectors at work and atFire Marshal staff home. The time change (spring forward one hour) is at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 11. Test your smoke alarms once a month, then replace the batteries at daylight saving time. Smoke detectors wear out, so replace smoke alarms every 10 years. High risk residents include children, older adults and people with disabilities so if any of your family, neighbors or co-workers fall into this category, make sure they have working smoke alarms with fresh batteries. If you need assistance with checking your smoke alarms or replacing them, contact the City's Fire Prevention Department at 817-426-9174, 817-426-9175 or call the main administration number at Fire Station #1 at 817-426-9170. Spend spring break in the BRiCk pool
Head to the BRiCk's indoor pool during the week of Spring Break! The pool is closed on Monday, March 12. Open swim is 1 p.m.-8:30 p.m. (slide is open), Tuesday-Thursday. On Friday, March 16, open swim is 1 p.m.-7:30 p.m. (slide is open). Afternoon Learn-to-Swim classes are cancelled but all aerobics classes will continue as scheduled, March 12-March 16. Morning lap/fitness swim hours are 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Playstructure Only hours are Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m.-noon. Saturday and Sunday hours remain the same - open swim, 1 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, and open swim, 1 p.m.-5:30 p.m. on Sunday. The BRiCk is located at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd. Read More
City launches Community Voice
Community Voice iconThe City added a new tool to the communications toolbox by launching Community Voice. The purpose is to allow citizens and website visitors to interact with City staff and with each other by suggesting initiatives, posting ideas and participating in conversations concerning community proposals. To be part of Community Voice, website visitors must create a profile through the "My Dashboard" feature located at the top of the City website. The categories are Economic Development/Business Development Ideas; Environmental/Going Green Ideas; Parks and Recreation Ideas; Planning and Zoning Ideas; Public Library Ideas; Public Safety Ideas; Public Works Ideas; and Suggest A New Topic. Fire marshal and MYC host Fire Awareness Poster Project contest 

The Burleson Mayor's Youth Council is partnering with the Burleson Fire Marshal's office for a second year to promote fire safety by harnessing the creativity of youngsters.  The Fire Awareness Poster Project comes with a theme, "Play it Safe, Plan Your Escape." The contest is geared toward students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Participating students must live inside the Burleson city limits or Burleson extraterritorial jurisdiction. All art work must have the entry form taped to the back and must be turned in at Burleson City Hall no later than 5 p.m. on Friday. March 30. The poster contest rules and guidelines as well as the entry form are on the Mayor's Youth Council page on the City website. The winners will be announced and prizes awarded at the Injury Prevention and Safe Kids Community Fair, 4 p.m. - 7p.m. on Friday, April 20, at Bartlett Park. Read More 

Facilities close for Good Friday, Easter
Trash and curbside recycling will be collected on Friday, April 6, but most City facilities will be closed for Good Friday. The BRiCk will be open 6 a.m.-3 p.m. on Good Friday, open regular hours on Saturday, and closed on Easter Sunday. The library will be closed Friday-Sunday. The Senior Activity Center will be closed on Good Friday, open for regular hours Saturday, and closed Sunday. The animal shelter will be closed Friday, but open Saturday, April 7. Hidden Creek Golf Course is closed for a redesign, but the pro shop and grill will be open. The compost/mulch/recycling center will be open on Saturday, April 7. Read More
Frugal Mom explains couponing

Do you want to be a frugal Mom? Don't miss Frugal Mom's Guide to Couponing on Saturday, March 24, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the BRiCk. The Frugal Mom will lead the 3-hour workshop and talk about ways to maximize coupons and minimize your grocery bill. The fee is $15. Workshops are also scheduled for April and May. Mayor's Youth Council hosts 'If I Were the Mayor of Burleson' essay contest

The Burleson Mayor's Youth Council is hosting the "If I Were the Mayor of Burleson" essay contest. This contest is for MYC logostudents in middle school and high school who live inside the Burleson city limits or in Burleson's extraterritorial jurisdiction. Essays must be typed and at least 250 words in length.  Essays must be turned in at Burleson City Hall no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, March 30. The essay contest entry form is on the Mayor's Youth Council page on the City website. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at the Injury Prevention and Safe Kids Community Fair on Friday, April 20, 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at Bartlett Park. Read More
