Remarkable CreaturesMonday Night group will discuss 'Remarkable Creatures' Feb. 20

Check out a copy of "Remarkable Creatures" by Tracy Chevalier so you can participate in the Burleson Public Library's Monday Night Book Discussion Group, 6:30 p.m., Feb. 20, at the library. The book focuses on Mary Anning, who is struck by lightning as a baby. Mary learns that she has "the eye" and finds what no one else can see. When Mary uncovers an unusual fossilized skeleton in the cliffs near her home, she sets the religious fathers on edge, the townspeople to vicious gossip, and the scientific world alight. Stop by the library at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave. or go to the Adult Programs page on the City website and request a copy of the book.

Is recycling a New Year's resolution?

Is recycling one of your New Year's resolutions? The City of Burleson contracts with Community Waste Disposal for curbside recycling (green 18-gallon plastic bin) for residents of the city.  Recycling is collected once per week.  All items must be placed in the City-approved green bins and placed Curbside recycling binat the curb by 7 a.m. on your recycling day. One bin is provided for each residence. Additional bins may be purchased for $10 each. To order an additional bin, call 817-426-9830 during regular business hours.  Lids are available at the Municipal Service Center, 725 S.E. John Jones Dr., at no charge. The City also has a Recycling/Mulch/Composting Center at 620 Memorial Plaza (behind Fire Station #2/next to Burleson Memorial Cemetery). The center accepts the same recyclables as curbside pick-up. The recycle center is open Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The center is for city residents, only. To see what can, and can't, be recycled, go to the Curbside Recycling Brochure on the City website.

You need the permit, but you don't pay a fee and you don't need City signs

If you want to host a garage sale in Burleson, you still need a permit, but you don't have to buy City-issued garage sale signs or pay a fee. City council amended the Secondhand Goods ordinance last fall. Residents still need a permit from city hall, but in the future, they will have the option of completing the paperwork through the City website. The new sale signs cannot be bigger than 15 inches by 22 inches. The restriction on the number of garage sales and the duration of the sales is still in place. Garage sale permits can be obtained at Burleson City Hall, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. To view the ordinance and the amendments as well as get a list of the garage sale locations (and map), go to the Garage Sale Information page on the City website.

How do you know if weather closes City and if trash/recycling trucks will run?

With temperatures ranging from the 50s to the 70s recently, it doesn't look like Punxsutawney Phil's Groundhog Day prediction of six more weeks of winter is going to affect Burleson, yet. But if it does, how do you know what City facilities are open and if your trash will be picked up when the weather turns icy? Check the City website, the City of Burleson Facebook page, and the City of Burleson Twitter page. You do not have to have a Facebook profile or a Twitter profile to view the City pages. City government closings will also be included in the spotlight or in the news flash on the homepage of the City website.
