Taking the initiative earns Hunter Firefighter of the Year honors
Twenty-seven-year-old Kevin Hunter has worked at three fire departments and has a lengthy list of certifications but it is initiative that earned him the Firefighter of the Year honor at the Burleson Fire Department's awards banquet. Hunter's lieutenant said Hunter "goes beyond the normal duties that are given. He and his fellow firefighters handle medical reports, assist with bunker gear, do pre-plans at businesses, and handle inspection duties. Not only does he complete what is required of him, but he and the crew take on extra projects that will better the whole department." More |
City celebrates Centennial year of incorporation with plethora of events
The year 2012 marks the 100th anniversary, or Centennial, of the incorporation of the City of Burleson as a town. The City is celebrating that milestone with a list of events that are sure to peak the interest of residents and tourists. The list includes the dedication of Centennial Park, a book signing for the City-commissioned episodic historical novel, the dedication of the Military Veterans Grove, and the finale - a black tie affair gala to wrap up the City's centennial year. City-sponsored Centennial events stretch from February through December 2012. Read More |
Fire Officer of Year recognized for leadership and knowledge
Professionalism, leadership, and knowledge were words used to describe Burleson Fire Lt. Jeremiah Lozier, who was awarded the department's Fire Officer of the Year honor at the annual fire banquet Jan. 14. Lozier, a career firefighter with Burleson since November 1999, was described by fellow firefighter Bill Buchanan - who worked with the lieutenant on the Aug. 3, 2011, tower rescue - as a fire officer who "had confidence in the crew he was working with and allowed them to function freely to their maximum potential. During public appearances since the rescue, he has represented the department with true professionalism." Read More |
Silver Alert brought missing man home
The Silver Alert issued Tuesday that brought a missing Burleson senior citizen home within 10 hours of his disappearance was the result of a team effort including the man's family, Burleson Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) implemented the Silver Alert Network after Sept. 1, 2007. The network assists law enforcement in the recovery of missing senior citizens statewide. Silver Alerts resemble those issued for abducted children (Amber Alert). Law enforcement agencies must meet all six criteria in order to request that DPS broadcast a Silver Alert on highway signs. Successful pet adoptions hinge on training and socialization
A successful pet adoption largely depends on the behavior of the dog once it is in its new home. For that reason, the Burleson Animal Shelter is joining with the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) to promote January 2012 as Train Your Dog Month. January was chosen because so many dogs and puppies are adopted or purchased and brought home during the winter holidays. The goal is to promote using training methods that are kind, gentle and have an emphasis on building a relationship with your dog. In 2011, the Burleson Animal Shelter adopted out 415 dogs. Of that, 66 were returned. The most prevalent reasons were unrealistic expectations, the owner was moving, behavior issues, the dog was too active, family was allergic to the pet, and the dog was destructive outside. Centennial bookmarks highlight mayors from last 100 years of City government
The Friends of the Burleson Public Library and the Burleson Heritage Foundation have partnered to create Centennial bookmarks to mark the 100th anniversary of the City's incorporation. The bookmarks are limited edition, with a new one produced each month. Approximately 300 will be printed monthly, with 150 distributed at the Burleson Public Library and 150 at the Burleson Visitors Center. You can take home a bookmark for a suggested donation of $1. The January bookmark features the City's first mayor, George W. Bransom, who served 1912-1921 and again, 1924-1933. The bookmark also features the Renfro-Clark Home, which was the first home for the Burleson Public Library. Subsequent bookmarks will feature all mayors who have served Burleson. Read More |

Two Burleson firefighters, Hank Walker and Lt. Almost a dozen firefighters were also recognized for their help in battling grass fires through the TIFMAS (Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System) program.
