City's rainfall totals are down . . . we are still under Stage 1 water restrictions

According to the National Weather Service's United States Seasonal Outlook for Jan. 5 - March 31, 2012, Texas is still in the category of "drought to persist or intensify." The City's rainfall amounts reflect that outlook. Year to date (since the drought of 2011), Burleson has seen 24.04 inches of rain. That's down from the yearly average of 37 inches of rain. According to the Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD), approximately 70 percent of the state is in an extreme or exceptional drought. Parts of North Texas are now classified as abnormally dry. Burleson has been under Stage 1 water restrictions since Aug. 25, 2011. Read More

Who settled in Burleson in the 1800s?First grade class

Who settled in Burleson? According to the Burleson Heritage Foundation's "The First One Hundred Years" book published in 1981, the settlement was influenced by the general westward movement of people from the original colonies and states to the new frontier. The second factor was the destruction created by the Civil War (1861-1865). Southern families moved from the southeast to North Central Texas and settled in the areas of Marystown, Egan, Bethesda and Oak Grove. The construction of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad was also a major influence. With the planned railroad construction, a town was platted near a watering hole along the route. The town was named Burleson. The original town site (according to the warranty deed dated Oct. 10, 1881), was a lot located along Main Street, between Renfro Street and Ellison Street. Oct. 10, 1881 is the date of the founding of Burleson. Burleson was officially incorporated as a town on May 21, 1912.

What is accepted at City's compost site will change effective March 6
Effective March 6, 2012, the City of Burleson compost site will only accept brush, tree limbs and yard waste.  Residents will no longer be able to drop off other wood or wood by-products such as old lumber, desks, plywood, fencing etc., for grinding.  These items will still be collected at the curb during a resident's zone collection week. There are no changes for the drop off of curbside recycling materials at the City's compost center. Residents may still bring curbside recyclable products to this site for processing. The city's compost/mulch/recycling center is located at 620 Memorial Plaza, behind Fire Station #2 and next to Burleson Memorial Cemetery. The hours are Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Read More
